A friend asked me to reduce some weight on his longbow. I thought easy enough. I was carfull to count the passed and keep everything even and tiller looks good, brought it from 72lbs to 65lbs. When I looked down the center I noticed the top limb is twisted. I dug in my memory bank and think he had that problem a 18 months ago. I'm ready to put a fininsh back on but how can I get rid of the twist. Finish it first then use steam and heat?

Thanks in advance.

If its as self bow the thickness may not be even from side to side. The limb will bend towards the thick side. Steam and heat wont help if the thickness is off, it will go right back to where it was. If the twist is minimal and the string lays down the handle I wouldnt bother doing anything. Very few of my self bows are dead straight.

The bow is a fiberglass face/backed reflex deflex built by a well know bowyer. I have seen my frind string this bow....I believe thats where it came from. I did take some extra off the strong side and realized its a twist more that a tiller thing.

Glass bows are out of my knowledge base. I have only ever refinished or re-gripped a few glass bows. It seems to me that you could continue to take material off the strong side edge until it evened out. Maybe its beyond that?

There have been a couple of threads recently on straightening out a twist.  I've got a recurve that I bought at auction and I think it is finally staying straight.  People have suggested/used methods such as manually hold the limb in the opposite direction and do this over and over until it stays.  Some say use heat others are against that.  Some say use hot water others dry heat.

I had to put some pretty good tension on mine and leave it that way overnight several times.  It took at least three weeks but I was able to shoot it the other day.

I've had good  success using hot water.  Hold the limb under a faucet with the hot water on for a few minutes, when the limb feels warm to the touch, apply pressure in the opposite direction of the twist past straight.  Hold this for A few seconds then turn the faucet on cold and hold this till the limb is cool, then release the pressure on the limb.  Will probably take several sessions to get all of the twist out.  I've done two recurves this way with success, a Bear Grizzly, and a Browning Nomad.....Dan

Thanks guys, I will put a finish on it and try to straighten it out with a little heat.
