Just some wood from morning hunt.

Here is some wood I got today, still have some on the ground but will get it in the next couple days.  The cedar is 79"s long and the first knot is about 68"s up from the bottom.  The osage is 76"s long and in good shape.  It started to run on me so I didn't want to split it until I could get it home.  The ones I have down are from 67"s to almost 76"s long.  Not a bad morning hunt.






Not to bad for a morning hunt in the woods.

Wow, not sure I've run across and Cedar here that is that clean and without knots/branches...the heart wood is DARK too, what a beaut!

I know everyone is drooling over the osage but  that cedar is amazing, it is what I got a pile of sinew waiting on. AWESOME

Good lookin wood oldbow. I went out and cut some osage today too. I found a bunch of osage and mulberry in an old creek bottom that my dad told me about. I also found some of that hercules-club wood too. First time I have ever seen any of it around here.

Does it have rings? I can't see any rings, just wondering cause I've seen it around here near the river.

I wouldn't mind experimenting with different woods because there are so many different species that we have here and so far all I've used is Osage (Hedge) and I was thinking about dropping some hickory, Ash, and Elm. I know those work well, but what about other less popular species??

Sorry Phil, hope I didn't jack your post. I'm just curious since you also got the cedar and the hackberry.

DVSHUNTER, it isn't a hackberry, looks like it some but the spines are much larger, MUCH larger. It is

Zanthoxylum clava-herculis L.

Family: Rutaceae (citrus, etc.)
Common names: Hercules' club, toothache tree, tingle-tongue
Synonym: Zanthoxylum macrophyllum

Also called, Hercules'-club Prickly Ash

SEMO, it has some good rings a bit harder to follow then Osage though.  It is tough wood.  This is one of the largest I have found so far.

I have heard of prickly ash but never seen any.man I would have to try to make one backed in its own back, that would make wild "mad max" type conversation bow.

It is some wicked lookin stuff. If I hadnt seen that picture on here a while back I probably wouldnt have even noticed it. The trees I found werent quite as big as that one in the pic.

Hey Semo, if you've only worked with osage then you are already spoiled. I started with the other woods and then moved on to osage. Osage is the greatest and most forgiving bow wood out there. I'm not saying you shouldnt try some of the other woods. They make good bows too but they just arent the same as osage. JMHO
