I've made many arrows from dowels, and the grain cannot be overemphasized.

Since you get to choose, choose only the ones with good grain, leave the others in the bin.

My favorite is poplar, its widely available with perfect grain.

OK, just to beat a dead horse...

The stakes/shafts that Pacforest sells do come from Rose City (per RC website), but are sold as "seconds" -- intended for staking and NOT to be used as arrows.  They are in fact rejects.  They are rejected for many reasons: grain, size, quality of wood, etc.  There are some that are half-rounds, some have been curved, and some others came from a burned up log.  All of these defects are just fine for using in your garden or on your plantation, but not as arrows.

Just wanted to confirm everything above.
Also, Pacforest sells Reforestation tools and such...how much do you think they know about manufacture of arrows and LB?  :)

The Footed Shaft has some Acme premium shafts from the 60's listed! Check them out!

When I came home to trad a year ago I was shooting a 35# self bow. I found some cheap cedar shafts on *****. $32.00 for 24 shafts.

They were all very straight and shot well.

Now I have a 50#  and a 55# Bow. I ordered another 2 dozen from the same guy. This time I had a spine tester to use. Every single shaft fell with-in the 50-55 range. I havn't really looked at grain runout because I've never had a shaft fail. ( ignorance is bliss right?)

I have shot the heck out of these arrows all summer long. I am verry happy with them. I would recomend them to anyone.

That being said, I am not an expert at all. I just tried to save a buck and it worked for me.

These might be the same shafts you all are talking about!?
