Ouch, sorry bout that, hope that you didn't get hurt in the blowup.
Always say what you mean, that way people will know you mean what you say.

hova

that stinks. looks like it woulda been great.

@dvs : it was , until i found my hunting knife. then like i said it was even worse knowing thar's gold in them rings!

@ vanilla : i hadnt thought of a lawnmower blade. i dont know how many of these i have sharpened so much they wore out , and ended up throwing away. i used to do lawn commercially. i know a new one for a gravely is only about 8$ , so i might have to pick one up for other projects.

already had a couple members offer them , both free and for cost. if i end up getting one for free , my swap will be only possible cause of the courtesy of members here sending things. i think the only thing i bought besides some b50 , is a set of chainsaw files. oh , and my sureform. everything else has been donated , so its only appropriate that my swap build is built from these tools. toss in the knowledge that has been volunteered so freely , and you got a community bow.

i guess its name will be "It takes a village" or i guess it should be "It takes a tradgang"

Greg, those are beauties.
Goose looking real good.Like Pat said get to short string ASAP.
I got some Buffalo sinew pounded and stripped today. I'll do a little more tomarrow and start getting that bow sinewed.
Do most people here know how to prepare sinew or should I post pics of that process as well?

Roy,Sorry to hear that. Thats bow building, Sometimes your in the grove and everything clicks and other days you go back to school. Happens to us all.
Post pics with a short "How To" in the Bowyers Bench if you would please. I don't have any plans to use it anytime soon, but would enjoy the how to none the less. Can't never have too much info tucked away in memory.

Hova, I made my draw knife from a lawnmower blade. just cut out the shape you want, add some handles and sharpen. Mine's pretty ugly but gets the job done. Got the old rusty lawnmower blade for free. If you have a way to cut steel (dremel, angle grinder, hacksaw, etc.) you could make your own.
Hey VB.....Me Too! That's what I've been using since day one! Works great and I love the angle of my handles better than any original shaped draw knife. I also use mine as a large scraper to take off lots of material using it straight up on edge.
This is too weird, small world?
Lawnmower blades work awesome and hold an edge pretty dang good! Simple as heck to make, just cut out the general shape with a grinder, weld some short pieces of round stock on each side for handles, then sharpen and get to hacking away!!

No-sage

tradbower,

That break looks more like a belly blowout than a bamboo failure.  Sometimes it's hard to diagnose a failure, but knowing what to look for can help out on the next bow.

The way the bamboo is sheared almost straight across leads me to believe it's a result, not a cause.  When a backing goes it will usually splinter up, look almost frayed.  When the break is clean like that, it tells me that the belly went first (crushed, blew out a chunk) then the backing snapped clean because there was nothing supporting it.

Pat B

No-sage, to me it looks like it went at a node.

Posted a short "How To" thread showing the sinew process, as requested by Semo.
Here she is sinewed.

Keenan, I am looking forwar to seeing this one.

Oh ya, I love the stave bench, anvil, I-beam bench,vise....I figured you had to have a section in your shop for metal work too.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

I think I have my trade bow stave picked out.  It is a belly split osage with nice rings and a little character.
