Just finished this bow from an off split piece. I had to use the sapwood because I was limited in the width of the split. It came out okay. It took all of the 1½ in. of reflex as set and now holds a straight profile when unstrung and about ½ of follow after shooting. It measures 61in. ntn and pulls 60@28.  I aded antler tips as usual and a dynaflight 14 strand string. It still needs two more coats of tru oil before going to it's new owner.  This is the sister of another sapwood bow I made earlier this year I just didn't get any pics of that one before I shipped it out. Sorry about the poor pics, but they are all my phone and a five year old can do.

The handle shows the contrasting sapwood better.  Simple baseball stiched leather I got from an old leather jacket.

For my 1000th post, here is a pic of the bow braced in better light to show the sapwood better. Thanks for looking.

Looks very nice. Sometimes you can't help leaving a little sapwood. Jawge

Very nice, DVS. My goal is to some day make an osage bow. Hope it turns out so well.

sticks, actually the piece was cut this last august and I was able to just pull the bark off by hand and use that ring as it was under the bark. It had a small amount of spring growth under the bark, but it scraped right off for the final ring. The ring is only about 1/16th thick.

Very nice bow, Dave. That bow will really shine when the heartwood begins to darken. I've made a few bows with sapwood left on the backs and others with all sapwood. If harvested and handled properly osage sapwood is at least as good as most white woods and probably better than many.

Thanks all. I think the bow performs well. I haven't chronoed and probably won't have time to, but it shoots well.

Brock,
This piece is prety dry so I hope it won't crack.

Pat,
I agree with you Pat. I think sapwood makes very pleasant shooting bows. I would liked to have this one a bit wider, but it was all I had.

B- I saw your old thread about the sapwood bow, so I made sure I posted some pics of this one for you. Like pat said they make good bows. I like the look after they darken. Can't wait to see pics of yours.
