Lee Robinson .

I am going to be gluing up a bow with a cocobollo riser using smooth on. I know it can be tough to finnish, but I have a solution for that; however, is there any "special" prep that I should know about when gluing it up in the form in order to be sure that I get good adhesion in the form when using smooth on?

I have heard of some wiping the wood with acetone. Do you do this for all materials, just cocobollo, or what?

I wipe with acetone wait 10 minutes, also helps if it is freshly sanded before you wipe it down.

Lee,
I clean all glue surfaces with acetone before gluing, Just in case someone put an oily finger on the glass.

Wouldn't hurt to scuff the surfaces you're gluing a little too. If your cocobolo has been sanded to oblivian already i'd highly recommend this. I wouldn't rake the face with a saw blade or anything but get some lines on your surface using some 40-80 grit then definitely clean with acetone. I'd say every wood project should include that before glue-up.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am in the process of building my form, bought a bunch of wood, ordered the stuff for the bow, bought a bunch of tools that I needed for the project, making a heat box, and right now I have exhausted arms from sanding on my form...and I am sure I have left something out. Educational.
Until next time...good shooting,
Lee
