Yew and heat treating?

Is Yew a candidate for heat treating? If not how stort would you make a sinew backed yew bow?

Yes it is, I would go as short as 36 inches and as long as 44 inches for sinew backed Yew with drawlength of 22-25 inches

Haven'tworked with yew before that is why I asked. would 58 with a stiff handle be alright for a 28" draw?

I am reworking a bow that I traded for. It is 67" and has about 4 " of set. Made by Jay St. Charles. Will either heat belly or shorten and sinew it.

Just a guess but I would say if Jay St Charles made the bow and it has 4" of set then it was abused! With that much damage to the belly cells you may not improve the bow by heat treating the belly. By shortening it you will stress it even more. Sinew won't help much and especially on a bow that long.
If it were mine I'd hang it on the wall and make myself a good bow from scratch!

I don't have any yew in Missouri, will probably heat treat and sinew. I don't like to have bows that just hang around to look good.

as pat says i agree i do plenty of yew i wouldnt even heat treat that one if it was made by jay and like pat says it abused id sinew it thats it does it have the sap on it if so forget the heat treatin id say heck u even gotta get the finish off ha brock post some pic s bro
