Has anybody tried that hide glue from 3rivers? I was thinking about using it to apply sinew to the back of my little osage bow. How do you use it?

Dano

Just go to the grocery store and pick up some Knox gelatin same stuff.

Bill, you can do what Dano says, and some are even using TB3 glue. I have a big bag of hide glue I traded Jim Hamm for back in 1991. If you like I can send you a small bag. Let me know if interested, good shootin, Steve

I can' believe how strong knox is.  I did some wraps on a bow, and its not coming off.

Lee Lobbestael

Thanks Frank! How do you knox? Just add water or what?

Dano

Check out Sparky's site for some good info.  "Prepare the hide glue by warming with a double boiler or other heat source. I use a warming plate from an old coffee pot. Insure that the glue does not exceed 150 degrees. Knox gelatin can also be used as it is the same basic substance, only more refined. Take your glue granules (hide or Knox) put it into a heatable bowl and add just enough water to cover it. Leave it until it softens and begin to slowly heat it. It should be about the consistency of thin syrup and at a temperature of approx 110-120 deg before using." There's more on the link below.

To add what dano said, I found out the hard way what happens to sinew if you try to dip it in too hot.  It will curl up fast like a kinky curl and be un-usable.

I seem to always find out things the hard way.

Thanks guys! Dano that web site is a big help

Jeremy

So how does TB3 hold up and work compared to hide glue?

I used TBIII for covering wraps.  But I can't imagine using it for my primary glue for sinew.  It would be more difficult IMO to use than thin hide glue.

That is a nice site.  Lots of information.  Thanks

TBIII works fine with sinew but you won't get the same effects as you will with hide glue(Knox).
