Designing my first three piece take-down.

I'm ready to play with a three piece takedown longbow. I want a reverse riser and a an R/D profile. I'm thinking 62-66" NTN. The first one will be 66".

1. I'm designing it around a 1.5" width limb and riser.

2. What are the dis-advantages of only one alignment pin?

4. How thick should my limb pad wedges be in my limb? How long of a taper?

I took a photo of my sketch for you guys.

I would prefer to have the limb wedge on the back of the limbs like in the sketch, with the bevel on the riser ends mating with the taper on the limb wedges. I'm thinking about a 1/8" of phenolic on the belly of the limb butts, so that I can counter-sink the bolts. The riser limb pads will be flat in the final bow. I think it would be too ambitious to try and make them curved, even though that would really look sweet. The final design may not have this much R/D.

What are your thoughts?

Bow design is about 6 levels above my pay grade...but...I'm looking at your riser length and wondering if the sight window is gonna cause you to have to narrow the top limb butt too much??

Well Apex, that looks outstanding...I cannot wait to see this one. When i make a TD that long I use a 10" long limb pad and make it about 1/2 thick.  But I would say anywhere between 8-10 would work.    I made this little jig below to grind them:

Are you going to use the Bingham T/D limb bolts?..just wondering if you knew of a source to get flat ones like on a Black Widow (rather than the bezel style Bingham's carries.

Excellent point Tom!  I will refine everything after I build a mock up riser out of soft pine.

I am going to order Bingham's hardware kit.  I think I will build up the belly side of the limb butts with phenolic accents, which will cover the alignment pin hole I plan on drilling through the limb, and give me enough material to counter sink the limb bolt heads.  My plans may change though.

I'm not much of a TD guy,but can you give it any more reflex for preload? That would be my only change were I doin it,and I'm not even sure I'd do that.

What is so cool Kenny, is that I can make it any way I want it.     I will play with some dummy parts until I have what looks good to me.  I'll keep you guys posted.

Looking good Marty.  I made my first three piece TD recurve about two months ago.  Can't wait to see it.  You are right Marty that is what I like about making my own I get to decide what I like.  Right now I am working on a R/D longbow with the socket style takedown.

That is going to be one sweet looking longbow, but I would agree with Kenny on putting more reflex in those limbs.

Agree with more reflex with that design. Here's one I did for my grandson. But this is a bit too radical. So somewhere in between ought to work well.

I haven't shelved the two piece, but this one came to me in my "day dreams".

Don't get too caught up in the sketch, because it is mainly just to get the riser from my mind on to paper.  I'm looking for 1" net reflex, which is slightly more than what the drawing shows.
