wood burning (intentional/designs)

Any experience here with this type of wood burning.. I did a search, but only came up with band saw/sander burning..

Wondering about burning arrows, ect. in wood..  Will a good soldering iron work??

As a former serious duck decoy carver I know a thing or two about wood burning as I burned every quill and barb of every feather on the decoys I made.

You can get by with a soldering iron like wood burner from the local hobby store. You need a very fine tip to make a distinct line, an average soldering iron would be too course.

I used this one when I was making ducks. It has interchangeable tips and varying heat settings. One can make the finest detail with the tip I have in this now.

 

Try to find one in a hobby store with a similar fine tip for burning designs on your bows.

Interesting, Eric - always wondered why I could never get as fine a lines as I wanted. Never happened to see one of those. How pricy are they?

HEY... I think I may have actually lucked out on the soldering iron I've got.. I've got the standard flat bevel type tip.. But, I've also got a couple tips like a sharp pencil, and a adapter type "collet" that takes an exacto type blade.. I do not have temperature settings though.. Anyhow, I will not be burning my initials into my risers any time soon..

Just saw some long slender arrows on some limbs that I liked..

Tim, my hobby turned into an all consuming business in short order. I put down my tools in 86 and never made another duck. I still have one half finished that I may never finish.

I never have let the bow making turn into a business.

Bernie, Detail Masters sell for about $160 now but there are a lot of less expensive models out there.

I got a $10 (on sale) kit from a hobby store and can do some pretty detailed stuff.  It's not as quick on hardwoods as the professional models but does fine with some patience.  It works great on soft woods.  Do a search on pyrography.
