Puma knife sheath eating blade

My Dad brought me a Puma Pal back from Germany.  The sheath that came with it is eating/etching the blade. Is there anything a person can do to the leather to stop this? Thanks

I would suggest not storing it in the sheath when not in use. There is acid in the leather. Also clean and dry the knife after use. A friend of mine soaks his sheaths in a strong solution of baking soda and water over night and then rinses out the sheath with clear water and drys it out then coats his blade with light gun oil. I havent tried this myself but it sounds logical that the baking soda would neutralize the acid?

All of my sheaths get dipped in a solution of Balistol thinned with a light grade vegetable oil. I tried to use one without dipping it and the blade rusted over night. I dipped it.

Will uses for Balistol never end? We used it in the gun club in Germany and I love the smell of it.

It was developed for the German military as a rust preventative, but also for emergency field use as an antiseptic and wound cleaner during WW II. I'll have to try that on my next sheath, although I use only vegetable tanned leather and haven't had much of a problem so far.
