Made this over the weekend. Had the help of a knifemaker friend and mentor.

5160. Mar temper, 13.5" long, hidden tang.  Also, my first big knife.  Hadn't made a knife in 20 years... all my others have been stock removal.  I should have wiped the oil off!

What material did you use for the guard?

Steve:
The guard is brass.  It is all that was at hand.  I prefer nickel, but didn't have any handy at the time.  Tried stainless, but due to the lack of a mill, I had to chain drill the slot in the guard and file it to fit the blade.  It was taking forever with the little file on the 440, so I succumbed and went with the brass  :)   My mentor was working a knife project next to me and smiling the whole time I was trying to file the CRES guard... I think he knew I would give in eventually!

That is amazing as a first forged knife! I would be thrilled if I could EVER produce a knife like that one.
