I need to make a bowie sheath. The blade is eleven inches long and one and three quarters wide. The guard is three and a half wide.I usually make a half inch welt on these.

The problem is I haven't done one with such a wide guard. Is it ok for the guard to stick past the top edges about three eights on each side.

I just don't remember seeing a bowie in a sheath with the guard sticking over.It may be common but I need input before going to all the trouble.

Thanks for helping a newby to sheath making

Yes it's OK. Sometimes I will try to design a knife to look good while in the sheath too. If I have a dropped choil, I have to make the guard asymetrical, being longer on the bottom.

Most of the time part of the guard will stick out, but not always.  I would trace it on paper and play around with the drawing. When it looks right to you, it'll be right.

I'd like to see a picture when it gets done. Lin

Thanks Lin.I didn't make the bowie and it is a simple sheath but I'll try to get a picture.

I have been learning forging and have my first bowie blade and 4 hunters done.I'm waiting on my Accuraglass and will post pictures when they are finished.
