Buying satanite and inswool?

Are there any "local" stores that sell these materials? How about fire bricks? Maybe they are specialty orders that I'll have to get offline.

I've got more files than I'll have time to work on this year and with that being the case I figured I'd put together a vertical forge using some of my ol' mans 10" well casing.

Well casing should work very well, and 10 inches is a good size. After you line it with one inch of inswool, it leaves you an 8 inch hot zone.
Fire brick - the soft stuff - can frequently be found locally.
The Satanite and Inswool MIGHT be found locally - depending on where you live! Most generally in a large metro area.
Otherwise, there's plenty of places to get them on-line.

I live in a fairly large city but I'm curious what kind of store would I be looking for? Either way, thanks for all the useful information that you've shared on the threads. I love viewing the knives you and others have made.

Look under furnaces or refractory.
You might contact some local "heating and air" contractors as well.

Any place that sells, services, or sells to boiler plants is a place to start looking. Check with your local school systems maintenance shop. Most of the schools around here have a boiler plant of some type, and they replace the insulating material in them.

Hey Tim pending on where you are in Washington or even this Washington ? McLenden Hardware carries inswool and both types fire brick the light weight not so good bricks and the super heavy last forever type.bd

Hi guys thanks for all the suggestions and help.

Bowdoc - I live in Spokane and decided I wasnt going to have time to search around for the supplies locally as I was going to be getting everything else together. I ended up ordering some stuff from the link above on Thursday.

Also a big thanks to Karl who took the time to answer my questions and send me e-mails full of information.

I got the body of my forge finished today. I used 12" pipe with an ID of 3/8". I also put together a lid like Karls smaller forge with handle. I still need to order a fan and run the propane Line into the coupler I welded into the side of the forge. I will post some pics when I have everything together, hopefully by the end of next weekend.

just google refractory supply and see what is in your area. It is WAY less expensive to actually buy yourself a #50 lb. bag from a supplier than a small bag from a knife supply store. There are plenty of uses, you will use #50 if you have it around.
