question
i'm having a friend make a me a small forge out of 6 inch pipe, and will be on a stand.
i've used plumbers torches in my brick forge but i want to put a 20# propane tank on this new one.
does anyone make a torch for this? and where can i buy it?
thanks dana

YES, I have used them in plumbing.  But not certain where to get one.
Try your local plumbing supply company (not home improvement store).  Also I would search the internet.
You may also be able to use a standard plumbers torch if you can find a simple adapter.

Please post a pic of the finished forge!  I'd be interested in seeing that!

Here's a 8 inch forge that I use for small knife work.
Lined with refractory wool.
"Torch" is made with fittings from the plumbing section and a small squirrel cage fan.
A little fabrication thought and a small amount of welding and anyone can make it it an afternoon.
Be forging the next day.

The large one is for reducing larger stock and pattern welding. Cut from a section of grain elevator auger housing.

Thanks for the pictures Karl
Let me ask you a question, If i put a torch in the side of the pipe with no air blower will this get it hot enought?, i'm making it kinda like the one brick forge. i thought i could use a 20# propane tank and some kind of torch in the side and it would work, tell me if it will not
thanks again

Dana,
You can look up forge burner plans online (look for venturi or Reil burners).  Ellis custom knife works sells kits for a few different burners, but a 1" venturi burner will be overkill for that small of a forge.

I have parts to make two new burners... all from the plumbing supply store.  Should really do a build along here soon.

Do some more research Dana beofre you proceed and you'll thank yourself later.
I'm not sure what you mean by "some kind of torch"?
And as Jeremy has said above, look for on-line plans.
There's a big difference between venturi type burners and forced air.
Venturi generally require a lot more fuel pressure to attain the same temp as forced air, so keep in mind fuel consumption.

Dana, and anyone else following this thread, from my personal experience on this subject and other aspects of knife making, don't just try to get by with the minimum.
'Cause that's all you'll end up with - the minimum.
Take the extra time, save up the extra money needed, and get the biggest and best "thing" you can get.
Heck, get two of 'em!
You'll thank yourself later.
