It is burned. I wrapped the haft with tape and burned the exposed part with a torch. I finished it by rubbing bee's wax into the wood.

Ingenious.

Do you soften the head before you work on it & then retemper, or do you leave it as is & work on it?  That second hawk was a CS too?  I'd have never guessed.  It looks fantastic.

I own a couple of their hawks, I can see the possibilities!

Here is the pipe bowl made from what use to be the hammer portion of the Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk.





We now have the blade of the new tomahawk, the haft, and the pipe bowl. I will now join the pipe bowl to the tomahawk blade with a piece of 5/8" brass and silver solder it all into place. I will also do some file work on the Hawk.

I do not anneal the steel. Axes and hatchets are differentially heat treated. Generally only the cutting portion is tempered and usually not very hard since many hatchets and axes are sharpened with files. You can faintly see the temper line on the first picture of the newly ground hawk. Grind slow and don't let it get too hot.

I used 1/2" masking tape and burned quickly so as not to burn up the tape.

OK, today I soldered the pipe bowl to the hawk along with some brass for decoration. I also did a little file work. Still have a few more things to do to dress it up and then I will rust blue it. I still have to work on the haft.

how is the pipe bowl attached to the hatchet head? its not a functioning bowl is it?

After approximately 35-40 hours, because I am old and slow, here is the finished product. I would still like to do a little tweaking on it, but for now it will suffice.

Thanks for looking. I hope this might help some of you who have long wanted a hawk. They are very good at splitting the pelvis of game taken and if kept sharp can be utilized in skinning game. Cold Steel makes another one that might also be worth a face lift. I can't remember what it is called but it is somewhat similar to the Rifleman's Hawk but smaller.

Very nice work. I am going to have to try something along the same lines.

I do have a question. I have a hard time keeping the head on the handle for anytime at all. The info I have says to attach the head via a "press fit" - which I  do - after which the head seems to be firmly attached. While I understand the head will loosen under use, my problem is that after any use at all (let alone throwing it) - the head is no longer attached. I would appreciate any thoughts on how to get the head attached properly.
