Wooden Hunting Arrows...

Always been a firm believer in carbon arrows, but just lately I've been looking at makeing a set of hunting woods! Searching the net and asking people in the UK circut about weight aspects because I'd like to go back to Africa in 08 with at least 700-1000gr in weight! Forgewoods?? PO with loads of gunk on??? What do you guys suggest??

You might want to try Chris Boyton's pine shafts. You can get them via Goldflight archery in the UK. 65/70# shafts weigh in at around 480gn at 29" With 200gn up front, you should be OK.

I hunted buffalo in Northern Australia with 860-grain Ipe (Brazillian Mahogany) arrows with good success and great penetration on two bulls. However, if you can get the Forgewoods, do so, they are the best there is----small diameter, heavy, and highly compressed (which makes them denser and more durable). I would have used them in Australia, but I  only had a half dozen and couldn't get any ordered in time for the hunt. The Ipe shafts were a very good second choice and performed quite well.

You might want to look into hardwood shafts such as birch or ash. I use mostly ash and a 30" arrow with 125grn field points come in around the 700grn range no problem. I have made some in the over 800grn range.

Hickory makes a good heavy weight arrow.

Rik, I've also heard nothing but good things about forgewood shafts but they are'nt made here as far as I know!

Rob, I'll definately look at Goldflight, good quality?? The last pine shafts I got were terrible but hey thats wood, it does'nt always co-operate!
Lets hear what the rest of the gang has got??

If the weight is all you are after, fill those carbons with table salt...

Best quality arras I've seen mate. All spined to within 1# of each other and only 10gn variation in a whole dozen. This is Dennis's dedication to quality. He'll individually spine & weigh every shaft before sending them out at no extra cost. They cost (if memory serves) £28/doz.
Can't comment on forgewood or any other hardwoods personally, but I've never heard a bad word said about Ipe shafting ('cept maybe price)
