Matt- What did you think of going from a 45#ish bow to a 50#? I'm thinking about stepping up to about 50# also. Any impressions or feedback would really be appreciated.
The difference between 45 and 50 isn't too noticeable if the bows are marked accurately and of similar design. I would suggest training with an even heavier bow to build up the strength then maintain strength by shooting frequently.

So, since I've got a new HH big Five coming this week, my first hill style bow, I've got a question. I'm sure its been covered before, but what string does everyone prefer on these bows? My usual method is 12 strand D-10 with dacron padded loops, is that a good route, or should i stick with all B-50 strings? My bow has antler tips, so i believe that makes it FF capable.

Thanks, Zane

ChrisM

Craigs bows have a fiber glass wedge in the tip so even without overlays they are FF compatible.  For my the B 50 that came with it shoots best for me.

Zane, The D10 will work just fine. I shoot a thin FF on my Hill style bows and prefer that over B50.

Jack,

I'm sure the hobbiest was well represented in the 1993 ads. I imagine that some of their bows were fine, but like you said, building them for a second job had to be a real pain.

The use of the word "inferior" was mine, not James'. James did say that some bows of the time were overbuilt to make sure that they didn't break, and were therefore heavier than they should have been. Of course, that's the bowyers choice, and the customers choice, on whether to have a light, nimble bow, or one that has a bit more mass.

I emailed David Miller and he said that he will be at Kalamazoo, but not taking orders.  He will be hanging around John Lee's Hill display.

David get with a string maker and they will tell you how they want the string measured. That Northern Mist should be FF compatible if it has wedges or tip overlays. Some bows like B 50 others like FF according to what arrows you are shooting and other factors. I would get both and see what it likes. You can always use one for a backup in a bind. I like SBD 10 strand FF. LBR also makes some great strings.
Look forward to seeing pictures. Steve knows how to build bows.
