I shoot woods so I have a question about carbons.
My nephew just picked a 58" Bearpaw slickstick long bow 50# @ 28". He pulls 28".
He's only been shooting trad about 6 mos.
His local pro shop sold him a set of ICS 400 at 31" when he purchased a 40# recurve back then. He is using 125 tips.
I want to surprise him with a new set of carbons but I feel he should be shooting 500's about 29 1/2" length. Any thoughts.
Depending on who's arrow chart I look up I get different results. Some say 400 others say 500

500s for that weight & draw length, unless you are going to leave them full length and really load up the front.  Most of my bows are in the 50-53# range with a 28" draw, and I am shooting 500s with as much as 250 grains up front, and no arrow length shorter than 30-1/2".

I'd say 500 for sure.
...may even want a little longer than you mentioned and/or a heavier head.

The spine issue has really come up a lot lately. I know I was mostly shooting 500 spine out of 50 pound bows, but recently bought some 600 spine for some lighter bows, and wad very pleasantly surprised how well they did out of 50 pound bows.

I think most folks that are shooting 400 on 50 to mid 50s could get away with 500 with good results

Thanks all for replies. The 500's sound right.
Just bought the Axis Trad 500's red bananas from Gary Hall he has in his sponsor listing.

Depends on what the head weight is. I bet a 125 grain head would work on a 500. Long
