Will a thermo-cell keep flies away when you are gutting and butchering an elk in the woods?

I do not know about flies in the elk woods, but on a Georgia hog hunt , they repelled nats, skeeters and some no see ums......but......the yellow flies ate us up !!!!! Of course in that part of the swamp they were almost as big as humming birds.....  :biglaugh:

I was in Florida once and those deer flies that fly around your head around and around and around.... the thermacell kept those things off me ...I was expecting it not to but I was  surprised and thankful that it did.

I know one thing I sure dang try it and see

I use my Thermacell at the archery club when using the range. It works very well keeping the mosquitoes and other bugs away. Flies are not a real problem. I wouldn't go there without it....Dave

In Ga you will be willing to give high dollar for one after one day in the swamp without. RC

I got one recently and tested it at home at elevation of 5600' and it functioned fine but over this past weekend it was difficult to light and to keep it lit at 8700'.  I'll probably keep it for trips to Florida and South Carolina but for deer or elk hunting in Colorado it's not much use.

Take a look at the new Backpacker model. Works on the same Isobutane  canister as a Jetboil or other camp stove. Designed to work at elevation.

That had been my experience before I got a new version, and it worked well at 9000 feet. I was pleasantly surprised at how it warded off skeeters.

I'll look into that, thanks for the tips.  Not much need for it in the fall, but this time of year some of my favorite hunting camp sites have some skeeters.

Always wanted to try it as most folks have good luck with it. When your walking/stalking will the thermacell keep the skeeters away?

I hate to sound like a pansy, but in early October I'd rather leave my shooting glove in the truck than forget the thermocell!!!!. Great invention, the smoke and scent dont bother me cause its headed down wind. rather than me slapping bugs and spooking in all directions!

As was mentioned, the original did not work for me at elevation (9000'+). It does work great at sea level for mosquitios.  Can't say about how it does for flies. If you are hunting elk at sea level, it might work well.
