I decided to try some carbons, now I know that there is come tuning and cutting involved in getting the correct arrow flight.  The biggest thing is being able to remove the insert as with wood shafts to cut and adjust.  Along with that, will regular hot melt work, or do you really need to use bohnings ferr-l-lite cool flex?

If you need to remove the insert, screw in a field tip and heat the tip...that way you don't heat the shaft too hot.

This is what I do too for tuning, then depending on the arrow you may have to go to a permanent glue or risk losing inserts all the time! Some arrows you can cut from the nock end, some you should cut a little from both ends and some it doesn't matter.

For tuning, you can wrap your insert with saran wrap,and push it into the shaft, for temporary tuning/bareshafting purposes - helps with quick changes during tuning.  Especially if you don't bareshaft and tune after fletching.  Then, you will have to cut from the point end.  And, definitely cleanout the shaft with denatured alcohol, and dry thoroughly, before gluing in the insert.  I have never had an insert come out, even with some hard hits, using Big Jim's hot melt.

Which carbon shaft? Need to know to tell if its ok to cut from nock end, a lot easier than pulling inserts.

Use Big Jim's Quick Stick hot melt for all your inserts, and never have to worry about getting inserts out of shafts, or losing them in targets!

I cut from nock end. I am one of those who foots his carbons. I like having the foots in place when tuning.
I did use the Saran Wrap method orginally before I stared footing.

Thanks all for the advice, will try the saran wrap method.  I was wondering if anyone used the new bohning product, but if hot melt works, will use the "field tip heating method".

The saran wrap method is the way I have been tuning my carbon arrows for the last 10 years.Works great and quick and easy.shoot,pull out the insert and trim and shoot again.

I use the saran wrap method, but have lost a couple in foam targets.  I stick to shooting them into bales or box of rags until I make them permanent.
