Draw Length and Arrow Selection Questions

I've returned to Traditional Archery after a 20yr break. Bought a Samick Sage 60" one piece recurve 45#.
I had my girlfriend mark an arrow 6 times while a went to full drawl. Came up with measurements from 27 5/8" to 28 5/8" most were 28"
I'm assuming as I shoot more it will settle down to same measurement as I get consistant.

Need to order arrows, going with Gold Tip Traditional Carbon arrows to start out with.
My questions are what length should I order and what size? 500's or 400's? Will start with 125gr Field Tips. Got to start somewhere.

125 gr tips from 45# Samick I would guess.600spine full length!  Call Rmsgear, sponsor on here, they sell lots and lots of those bows and match arrows to them probably every day, they will know what you need!

Definitely not the 400's, try 500's or even 600's

Yeah and maybe order a set of test points of different weights.

I would bet that Sage is cut to, or very near, center.  500s would work, if so, but I bet the 600s would be a better tune with 125gr points, and cut down to 30" or so.  And check Big Jim's - he has the GT blems in 600 now, you won't beat the price.

I agree with the recommendation on 600 spine; however, if you're getting the full 45#, which it seems you are, 100 grain points might work better than 125, which might weaken the spine of the arrow too much.

If you plan to hunt with this bow, I would go for 500 spine arrows and 145-150 grain points/broadheads.

You may want to figured out what weight you want your finished arrow to be before buying and cutting arrows and points. I had nearly your same setup when I got back into traditional gear just a couple of years ago. I ended up with arrows weighing less than 8-gpp with a 125-gr head. I ended up buying 140-gr points and 50-gr inserts to get over 9-gpp. And that may change your arrow selection.

Others here know a lot more about this than I do. I just wish I considered finished arrow weight before I started.

Out of my 47lb palmer I can shoot 600 spine GT with 125gr points but the arrow is too light for my liking so I shoot Heritage 90's with 165gr points or GT 500's with 145grs all cut to 28".

Just back from bow shop, bow is actually 48# @ 28"

Its 45#@ 27" an 50#@ 29"

Does your bow shop have any full length shafts you could try bare shaft with?

My breakover point is 47#. I would use a GT 500 on a bow of 47# or more. Probably a 145 grain point on a 29" shaft, but you would have to experiment. Of course, YMMV.

I'm sure they have full length shafts though, getting them to let me try anything I doubt it.

I got 2 500's to try. They seem to fly ok. I will experiment further. They didn't have 600's in stock. 4' feathers. I bought 2 to play with.
