It's been cool and rainy in the area of NM that I'll be elk hunting next week. Seems to be raining almost every day. At least the temps have dipped below 80.  Are rainy conditions good - bad - or indifferent when it comes to elk hunting?  Does it make them bed down more or move around more?  It was hot as heck last year so this will be a different experience for me..

thanks and good luck y'all!

Norb,

Cooler is good!!  Never known elk to care about rain, unless it's a big storm, they just do what elk do.

Might keep them out a little later in the mornings and get em up earlier in the afternoons.   That's a good thing.

Yep me too.  But you need to stay vigilant when the weather changes.  Elk will take advantage of cool weather and eat longer.

Good luck on your trip.

If you are hunting ie. wallows, a dip in temperature and rain can take away the desire or need to go to the wallow.  Sounds like it is plenty hot still, so I bet you won't see much difference.  We always like to think that the colder weather gets them rutting and talking better but I don't think I could be a witness to that.  The seem to be tempermental in the talking department with no apparent pattern.

Being from New Mexico originally and having bowhunted elk there for many years, the elk love the cooler weather and the rain. They will hunker down in a downpour. But after that, they seem to stay out and feed and sometimes I have witnessed the rutting activity increase. Love the rain! T

Not to mention the quiet stalking it gives me. The rain seems to get the elk moving a bit more. I don't get too excited until a little weather moves in!!!!!!!!!!!
