Can it be done?

I have a custom one piece recurve that I cant stand the grip and it really affects my shooting.  My question is can the limbs be cut off and made into a take down bow on a new riser? Is it practical? Thanks for the wisdom

Any chance you can re-shape the grip? Depending on the bow's weight and whether there's enough wood in the grip, it may be an option.

The grip that is wrapped in leather is the one i would like to change. The bare wood bow is the grip i would like the other bow to have. I can get kore pics this evening took these quick before leaving for work.

It looks as if you could remove the leather and add on bits and bobs of wood to create the more 'pistol grip' style handle you want.  Not gonna be pretty because matching woods and patterns would be nigh impossible.  But IMHO it could be done.

As mentioned -- last thing you want to try is cutting off the limbs and attaching them to a new handle; I think THAT would be doomed to failure. 

Less hassle all around to sell this bow and commission the original builder to make you a new one with the handle you want...

Personally I wouldn't do it. You will need a different wedge for a TD. Look at the pics and you can see what I mean.  You have to have enough wedge to bolt on a riser and still extend past riser end or you have a very weak spot at riser end.

I wouldn't like adding any type of wedge on outside of limb glass either.

Think I'd sell it and buy what you want.

Not sure if still available but 3 Rivers sold Form-A-Grip custom bow grip kit. Waiting for answer if it can be taken back off. Lancaster Archery has a product called Sugru Mouldable Glue that can be taken back off,I think I may try it. Hope that helps.

It looks like the appropriate grip for the style of bow. It looks like you need a different bow.
Why not try to sell or trade that one, rather than mutilate it. Or you could make a new bow for yourself and get exactly what you want

Yup, that was the right decision.

On a separate note, that Sugru is something folks have been making for years at home. Its nothing more than cornstarch and silicone caulking. The more cornstarch in the mix, the harder it becomes. I make and use it for all kinds of applications. Most recently, I formed a new gasket for my pressure pot. The nice thing about making it yourself, is that you are not limited to one color

Ok, you got my interest, what mix ratio and what to use for color please

I used 3-1 for the gasket. Best to make a small batch or two, so you can get it to the consistency you need.
For an add on grip, maybe 2-1? The more cornstarch in the mix, the faster it sets up. So if you go 2-1 or 1-1, better work fast!
I imagine many types of colorants will work as long as the concentration is not too high to impede it setting up.
I have used UTC's and epoxy colorants will good results.
