Shoulder surgery

OK. Had an appointment with a shoulder doc today.Apparently I am a candidate for shoulder replacement surgery on my drawing side. I would like to know if any in this group has undergone the procedure and how it affected your shooting. Doc said archery would be an activity that should be minimally affected if at all. Thanks for any and all feedback. If you are an orthopedic surgeon I would welcome your input as well. The presenting problem is osteo arthritis affecting the ball and socket.

Bill:

I have had both shoulders replaced and the draw-hand side was a much easier recovery than the bow-hand side.

You will be fine after the rehab and strengthening process is over. The first two weeks or so after the surgery can involve some significant discomfort, but you will get pain medication for that. The physical therapy can be challenging, but it gets a little easier each week. A good gym membership will help with the strengthening process after the end of physical therapy. You might be smart to limit yourself to bows under 45 pounds.

Just had my bow side shoulder replaced in June. Still working to get strength back. A bit longer of a process than I expected. Feels great though and I can feel my strength and stability improving each time I shoot.

Not 100% certain that it was on this site, but there's been an excellent "journal" post of the whole replacement process through rehab. Yes it can be done successfully. Google shoulder surgery. I always "timed" my 3 arthroscopies to not interfere with bow season, lol, but replacement is obviously a much bigger deal!

I had 2 shoulder surgeries one of which was a total reconstruction. The Doc said the best thing I could do to exercise the muscles in the shoulder was to crake my bow (compound) down as low as it would go then start practicing and slowly increase the poundage.

I didn't have shoulder replacement I had rotor and muscle reconstruction. Do what the doctors say it will come out ok. I work for a orthopedic company that make implants. Every body where I work believe it could be used on your family you want the best for Family. God bless

Thanks for all the feedback And support. MRI is Monday and a consultation with the doc in a few weeks. He comes highly recommended by other health professionals. I have a daughter who is an ER nurse so she asked around for me. If the surgery is required I think I'm in good hands. I think the doc is a bit OCD and is a perfectionist with 25 or so years experience. His last resort is surgery so I've got my fingers crossed. Thanks again for the feedback and support. 🙏🏹🦌🦃🐻🎖🎯

I had shoulder surgery about 1-1/2 years ago. It wasn't a replacement though. I needed the bicep tendon cut and relocated. Before the surgery, I couldn't pull 20 pounds, and am now pulling a comfortable weight. A good surgeon and strict rehab will do wonders for you.
