I use 4X8 sheets of bamboo "plywood" that appears to be the same or at least similar to what you have pictured.

That is action bamboo used often for laminations in glass backed bows.  That sheet is worth about 200.00.

SOOOO,can I make a self bow out of it? Thanks for your reply's.....Burt

Do you think if I rip it to say 1.5in then to 1/8 or less I could use it to back black walnut? And what I thought was veneer face is the edge of the boo, not veneer. Burt

It wouldn't work for backing, the power fibers have been violated. It's probably good for core material, just using the boo sections without any glue joints from the piece..

Thanks Roy, I"m not sure what to do with it,but I didn't want to see it get scraped in a warehouse clean-out.So I took it.May-be a table top.LOL...Burt

BSV,

If you back it with natural bamboo, it would work. My first bow was a "self bow" out of bamboo like that, took 4 inches of set.....40# though. I then backed one with bamboo @ 45#, it was a very smooth shooting bow. Look at Sam Harper's site poorfolkbows and follow his bamboo backed ipe bow. Alternatively look up Roy's recent trilam build. Enjoy...

Hey Pete, how thick did you make it? Burt

I'd use it for cores.
When making an 'all bamboo' bow you can transform the performance by heat treating the belly boo. Obviously with this stuff that's an impossibility.
Great for cores though!

If you have access to some natural bamboo slats, you could build an all bamboo tri-lam. Back and belly boo should be about 1/8" tapering to 1/16" at the tips. Make the core from your bamboo ply about 5/16" thick, tapering to no more than 3/16".
You can use a propane torch or a heat gun to temper the belly boo. These bows can be surprisingly fast and nice to shoot.
One thing about heat tempering bamboo slats. Do it before you reach final thickness because the heat will cause it to cup towards the outside.
Here are some pics of a bow I made a little while back.

Hey! I know that bow!! It's right over there in my rack!

Looks even better in person.

Can't wait to get it out on the range when the weather turns.
