When you seal a cocobolo and bocote riser with super glue how many coats does it usually take? Sand between coats? Thin glue or medium? Thanks, Bob

I tend to use thin glue, 3-4 coats depending on the piece, light sanding with 0000 Steel Wool in between coats

I just did this last night. One coat, 220 grit after to smooth it out, then poly 3-4 coats. I just use it to seal the pores a bit and make for a smoother finish. I suppose if you want a perfect, glass like finish with absolutely no wood pores showing, you'd prob want 3 coats or so. I don't mind a few showing. Oh, use 0000 steel wool between poly coats.

Hi Bob,

I found something I like better than CA- automotive clearcoat in rattlecan(don't make enough bows to own a spray gun)

It dries great on coco and bocote, also used it on E Indian Rosewood with great results.

I only put 2 coats on flats of glass surface, and 4-5 on wood surfaces.

Downfall- very glossy, have to steel wool it to hunt to suit me.

Sorry for getting off topic!  :knothead:

Hey, that's a good idear right thar Kenny!  I bet it's a much harder finish than poly too.

I used Zinsser Bullseye Shellac in a spray can for sealer on  a couple of rosewood bows..then 5 coats of Minwax Spar urethane  satin for the final finish. So far no problems, I wonder if there is a Matt finish auto clear coat??

Thanks guys, I did this one with one coat of medium CA and it worked great. Hard to sand but ended up really smooth and well sealed. Kenny, was that all you used? No other finish over the rattlecan clear coat?  Bob

Only the clearcoat, tried poly over it once. DONT!!  It gums up and you have to scrape it all off!!LOL
