for you bbo guys do you use pine pitch you harvest yourself or buy it?if self harvesting how do you prepare it?

ringo64

just collect the pine pitch on a stick.  melt and remove the big impurities. then mix with a bit of charcoal and  bees wax (just introduced to this last addition) which makes it more plyable when cold....not so brittle, and not too soft when warm.

I collect the hardened pitch and melt it in a can, remove the impurities like Ringo and add bees wax and charcoal. I have also used fine sawdust instead of charcoal. The charcoal(or sawdust, dried rabbit pellets, etc) adds body to the glue and the bees wax makes it less brittle. I don't use pitch on BBOs but I do use it for hafting stone and trade points on arrows and to haft stone knife blades to their handles.   Pat
