Hi:  I build a lot of fly rods.  When the rod is complete, I write the rods weight (line weight), type of blank, length and then sign it.  Writing on a bow is much easier than writing on a teensy tinsy rod.  Go to     www.globalflyfisher.com/rodbuilding/writing-on-rods

They have excellent info you can use to sign your bow.

I have been using India ink and a quill pen lately and usually put a coat of finish on first so the ink doesn't run on the bare wood. I used to use a Sharpie but found that that ink will fade after a little while.     Pat

I am switching to India ink also. Like Pat said the sharpie will fade after time, even in between coats of finish. Also I can't find a white sharpie and I want to sign my bows in white ink.

i started with a sharpie but after trying india ink i would NEVER go back. you can get it in a pen form from craft stores, i got mine at Michaels. the brand name is Faber-Castell, a four pack with different widths was about 10 bucks, worth every penny.

I use a Pilot - SCA-UF - Extra fine point. I think that a Pigma Micron would work, too. I write after two coats of true-oil and then three more coats of true-oil.
