So I finally got a heat treat oven large enough to do some full tang axes and hawks,
this is the first one all finished up! It is 11" oal, 3.125" cutting edge, and the head is 5.250" long.
The steel is L6 saw steel at .135" thick.
The handle is horse stall mat, with ss tubes.
I plan on doing some different models, let me know what you think.

That looks like a real handy tool. I like the horse mat handle and the profile of the blade.

That's pretty fine, Ben.  I can't wait to see the next one with a nice hardwood handle.

LOOKS GOOD BUT I WOULD LIKE A MODEL WITH HALF THE LENGH OF THE RUBBER MATERIAL OR WOOD JUST SEEMS THE FULL LENGTH SCALES COULD GET BEAT UP WHILE USING

That looks really handy!!
I think you've got a winner there.

Thanks guys!
The reason I ran the mat all the ways up the handle, was so you could choke up on it for small tasks.
And coming in at 17oz, it won't weigh you down either!

I definately like the looks of it, however, if I am packing an axe/hatchet, I really find I use the poll quite a lot, so I'd go for that.  Looks sweet though!

Ben:

That's awesome.

How well does the horse mat hold up as a handle material?

That looks amazing mate do you glue the mat on the same as wood scales? The pins are they flared out or are they straight pins with a bevel drilled in the ends.
Thanks KIM

It is glued on with west systems g-flex epoxy, the pins are beveled. I need to get a set of flaring dies for tubing.
