Oil Quenching

Hey All
I'm getting ready to finish off my first real attempt to make a knife. I'm ready to harden the blade and have a question on the quenching technique. I watched a vid on utube and the guy  lowered the blade upright, pointy end first into the oil. Is this so or just his way?

I think if it is lowered in sides ways or moved side to side the blade will warp due to one side cooling faster than the other...that is if I understand your question.

I've been told to lower  the blade into the oil cutting edge first, but I've never tried it.

You can lower it tip first or cutting edge down as if cutting the oil. Once in the oil, dont wave it around or it will warp, as mentioned. Have your moves planned out before you get started and dont waste time, but dont hurry to the point of hurting yourself. Just be deliberate in your moves.
  Hold it in the oil till it stops fizzing, then draw it back as soon as possible. In other words, dont lay it down till tomorrow. By then it might have cracked.

By draw it back I assume you mean temper it


By draw it back I assume you mean temper it right? I've read to put it in an oven at 400 for two hours. Is this right. If so is that 400 celcius or farenhite?
