I have a question for the knife experts here. I was given a Puma, Skinner many many years ago. By my parents. I wont go into detail on what happened to the knife. But lets just say it was missing for quite some time. I recently got the knife back. When I pulled it from the sheath, I was sick. Rust. I emailed Puma, they said nothing could be done with it. Does anyone here have any ideas? I`ll try and post a picture.

How pitted is the blade and how deep?<><

Hard to tell how deep, but it is pitted. But doesn't appear too deep. The other side isn`t as bad.

I am no expert but think maybe some 220 then 400 grit sandpaper and work upto 800<><

J Neilson has a tutorial for touching up a blades finish. I cant seem to find the tutorial, so I'll describe the process. You may have to use a little more elbow grease, but I'll bet it will work for your knife too.

He puts a sanding block in a vise in a horizontal position and drags each flat of the blade, starting at the guard, toward him. Apply firm pressure till you get to the tip and reduce pressure, just a little. Just go one direction or it wont look good. Start with 220 doing all of the flats and go to finer grits till you are happy with it.

Robtattoo,
Thanks. J is pretty sharp........I said sharp! uh..knives?.... never mind.

Even if the blade is chrome plated, it will end up looking better without the rust.

Here is a(Puukko) knife a friend asked me to clean for him with the above help I was able to do it with much more ease.
The blade is not spotless   "[dntthnk]"   but it is a lot better than it was.
Thanx
