Hi Guys, looking for some advice here on arrow specs. My new recurve has just been delivered and I'm hoping I have chosen the right arrows. Recurve specs:
60" PSE Stalker 45#
My DL is 28.5"
Arrow specs:
Carbon Core Stalkers
400 spine, cut to 30" length, 125g points, 3x4" parabolic feather fletched.
I do have some 175g points at home too.

I have been shooting self bows and this is my first recurve. All opinions welcome please.

Cheers, Soutie

I've several bows in that draw range and 500's always were what I used. You are going to need a lot of weight up front

imo 500 would be my 1st choice since that is what I shoot out of 45lb bows  point weight from 125 to 175 always worked for me

I'm not sure how the stalker is cut with regard to centershot.  If cut deeper than center then it should be more forgiving on arrow spine and you might get 400s to work.  500s might be a better choice, I usually find 600s to work well in longbows in that weight range, but I draw 2 inches shorter than your 28.5".
If you already have the 400s full length try them with different point weights.  If heavier points still show stiff, then you would need to move down to 500s.

9 Shocks

Try a 29.5 inch .500 with 200 grains up front.

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone. It seems so far that .500 spine is the preferred choice.
The Easton carbon spine chart for recurves  recommend the .400 with 125gr points with 45#DW.
Soooo, now that the guys on the ground are saying .500 then I may need to consider heavier points. Would it be all that bad to go up to, say, 250gr points? Wouldn't that improve my FOC?

Orion

Yes , 250 up front would increase FOC, and they may fly well for you.  I think they might still be stiff though. Worth a try if you have the points on hand.

Soutie, I shoot full length 400s with 145 up front for my recurve 45# @ 30" and with 175 up front for my longbow 41# @ 30". The spine calculators tell me I should be using 340s. For me to get a 340 to fly ok out of my recurve I need 250 up front. Sounds like 500 is a good starting point for you.

I shoot 31" 500s with a 145 grain point out of my 45 pound recurve and they shoot well.

I've had full length 400s work with 275gr up front with my 45lb that might work on yours cut to30". 500s are best for less point weight

Those spine calculators are good for compounds, but single strings, not so much. I shoot .600s out of that weight, but I only draw 27" I'm thinking .500 will be borderline depending on point weight and length but you should be able to get them to work. Don't get ahead of yourself and cut them - start full length and tune from there.
We are all here because we are not all there.

BINGO!

Yeah the spine charts aren't very good for traditional bows and carbons from what I've seen

Are you going to hunt with this bow? If not there's no reason to have all that weight up front. Are the limbs glass and wood or carbon and wood or carbon and foam. I use 500 spine GT with 125 grain points and standard insert from my Bear TD, 45@28 limbs. 500 spine is pretty versatile for me, just depends on which bow I am using and what for.

Matty

I would err on the weaker side. Ie. 600. Charts are guidelines and usually not even close. I say the weaker side cause you can stiffen it up by cutting it down or using lighter point weight if the bow requires it.  If you're gonna go 500. You may need to weaken it up a bit by adding point weight. But you can't make it longer. My point is by going 600 you have 2 ways to fix the problem. I shoot 1535s out of most of my bows upto 49# with 200g or 225g tips.

You are likely going to be too stiff with the .400's, esp with them cut down to 30". If the were full length, and you had somewhere in the neighborhood of 250-300gr (or even more????) up front, you might get them to tune.
