Another broadhead question

With Shawn's help I finished tuning my Carbon Express Heritage 150s recently and ended up with 225 grains up front. I am going to be using STOS broadheads so to get my 225 I used a 50 grain brass insert, a 30 grain long adapter (aluminum) from 3 rivers, and a 145 grain STOS.

My question is why does the adapter sit so deep in the STOS head? The adapter ends up between a 16th and an 8th deep into the broadhead. When I screw it onto the arrow a portion of the broadhead overhangs the brass insert. Is this right?

This is probably not a problem (or is it?), but I wanted to make sure this is not uncommon.

46'r,   A long alum. adapter usually weights 42-45grs.....maybe you're using a 5/16th adapter? Might explain why it sits so deep.

Not to hijack your thread, but can anyone say whether it matters if you use a 5/16th adapter on a standard broadhead? To be clearer, on 2016, 18, etc. Flitemate broadhead adapters (glue-in), the adapter is only 5/16th, I believe.  I like to use these, but most broadheads are designed to fit 11/32 adapters; does it hurt anything to use standard broadheads on 5/16th adapters?  Wow, that was wordy and pretty confusing, and I knew what I was trying to say! It won't hurt a thing if the adapter is smaller than the broadhead ferrule. You'll have a little less glue surface, but 1/16 doesn't amount to enough to matter.

It's certainly better than bigger than the ferrule according to Doc Ashby.

They say the 5/16 long adapters weigh 30 grains.

I was thinking that I needed the 5/16th because that is the size of my arrows/inserts. But it sounds like I should have gotten the 11/32 - right?

Yep, you needed 11/32 for STOS.  As long as you are using small diameter arrows there will be no problem though.  As long as the head is not hitting the arrow but overlapping it you'll be fine.
