I used the driven roller to adjust the tension of the belt. Buy raising or lowering the bed of the sander.

I was telling Flem how it tracked because of the roller center higher than ends.

Got it. I just hope it has enough power to do something

I have this 48x6 belt sander which can be used in both a horizontal and vertical position. On the back of the platen it has an open section. Just to see if it would work I stripped a sanding belt to a 2 inch width and sideways tracking was easy with the thing unloaded. When sanding the belt moves from side to side depending on how you sand. This was easily adjusted by how you put presssure on your work piece. Not the perfect solution, but if you are in need for a narrow belt sander, it works.

I was wondering about the side drift/tracking with a wide roller on those converted sanders.
Probably not an issue if the pressure is against the platen.
