Wife was busy with a shovel this morning

Marilyn was busy with a shovel this morning as we had some strong winds last night. She had to pick up a large fern on our patio which had fallen off a pedestal. She moved the pedestal back in place bent down and picked up the fern to put it back and this is what was right under it...... She just missed stepping on it when she mover the pedestal back and then had her hands within less then a foot of it when she picked up the fern.

Looks like you cut the wrong end off.

Looks like enough skin to cover a limb of your shortest recurve.

Nope.... its hanging off the tip of the shovel but it is a "short" snake.

I used to see those guys years ago squirrel hunting near Cobden, IL. Not my favorite critter.

I am about 30 miles from Cobden as the crow flies..... They still got em as well as rattlers.... These things are the one thing, besides my physical condition, that keep me from early seasons here in some areas.

You are right. Of all the skins I think copperhead is the prettiest. Wife thinks so also, now that she has had time to catch her breath.... LOL. She is a farm girl and has been around snakes most of her life but the sheer "how close she was" to this one kinda put the fear of God in her.

Glad no one was bitten. Pretty snake. Hope you can use the skin. Maybe get it cured and use it later.

Yep it was pretty. Unfortunately I am one of those folks that gets headaches from just being around (close proximity) one let alone skinning one so it is out for the buzzards to deal with. Kind of a shame cause it was pretty.

When I was a boy, 12,13 or so, we used to hunt them. We would fill a pocket with bits of gravel from a creek bend and then go to the rocky areas around where we knew they would hang out in the sunshine. When we found one we would toss bits of gravel at it until it got pissed. Once coiled up we would shoot at it with a bow and arrow. Most time we hit it in the head - not because we were good shots, we weren't, but because the snake would strike at the arrow coming it way. it was great to be a kid back then. No all they got are these little electronic gadgets.

Now, THAT is a legitimate, actual copperhead. I always wince when someone says they "killed" one. It usually just means they killed something harmless. Wow! She got it for sure!

I just can't help but look at a pit viper without feeling respect a sense of respect and awe for it. And definitely not a creature to be tolerated near the house. I would have skinned it out and preserved the hide.

I see Copperheads around my place on a regular basis and I leave them alone. They're not going to bother me if I don't bother them.

them things that bite are why I like it up here in Michigan. We only have one little rattler and they aren't ornery.
