Red elm for backing?

I have a straight grained red elm board that I'm thinking of ripping for backing for a tri-lam longbow.  It has a 3/16" knot and a small pin knot that would be in the center of the handle.  Think that would be okay or is it a bad idea?
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.
