Horn Tips opinions

I bought an old longbow at an antique sale Friday and it originally had horn nocks like the ones 3Rivers and others sell.

Are these good? This bow will likely pull around 30lbs at 28 I'm guessing. From what others have posted it appears to be lemonwood. The tips were missing when I got it. The bow limb tips are tapered points.

I'm sure they would work fine. They do look good and the price is reasonable. Pre-shaped nocks are tapered also and should be a fairly close fit. Probably going to need a little re-fitting though. Tite-bond glue 2 or 3 is what I've used to glue them on with. Most any epoxy will work also I bet........Art

Be careful with those old bows. Work the bow out a bit as you work it up to a full draw.

wow that is a long and lean bow there. If you want something different you could wrap the tips with sinew and build it up where you want the knock to be. I can't remember in which TBB I seen it but it was done to a cherry bow I believe. But Horn or antler would also be real nice on that bow.

It's a skinny thing but stout. I measured it to be right at 65".

well I would be interested in know what she pulls once you get nocks on her. What are the rest of her measurements ie fade, midlimb.

A friend of mine has had poor experience with the horn tips from 3R. The ones he got were rotten and fell apart. Now he makes his own from cow horn.

I know horn is a natural material and subject to failure but if you use bad materials to start it's bound to fail.

Grip area 3/4" wide and 7/8" thick. Mid limb is 11/16" wide and 3/4" thick. Tip where old nocks were are down to 3/8" round.

Grip area is about 7" long before fades begin. No splits or hardly any scuffs other than real light age worn finish.

It's been rainy out here. I finally got to working the tips down to proper taper for the horn nocks I got from 3Rivers.

Would JB Weld work for attaching or should I use something else?

While those commercial horn nocks are shaped nicely, they are unfortunately massive.  I rehab-ed a lemonwood bow a while back for a guy who had already bought the horn nocks.  I rasped those beasts way down and they were still huge.  It felt kind of a shame to put them on such nice skinny bow, but it's what he bought and wanted.  My preference is to custom fit them from scratch.  Here's a video of that build.

I glue them on with 2-part epoxy, stretching several layers of electrical tape lengthwise around them, and "tying off" with some wraps around the tape further down the limbs.  The tightly stretched tape keeps them pulled tight while the glue sets.
