Safe center cut riser

I was wondering how far in a rest can be cut on a bamboo backed epe longbow and still be safe. I'll be glueing on a walnut and osage riser block. Thanks for any help or advice.

I'd think if you have an overlay as well as the handle riser you could cut to center or slightly more. I don't cut in a shelf on any of my bows so I'm only guessing.

My educated guess would be that with the strong bow , and the strong lam riser , that there wouldnt be any bend in the handle , and if ya be careful , i dont see why you couldnt... i have been looking at center cut bows a lot lately , and some people do it with simple single piece risers...


hopefully someone with experience doing this will jump in , as im just speculating.

i use a circle template to measure the distance from the edge of the rest to the proposed dimesion of the riser.  it allows me to pencil in my rest and grip and keep an inch of wood (although i will go to 3/4 if i am using ipe) in all directions.  i am tdy at ft gordon right now, but when i return to austin will find the pic and post, good luck

Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated. I've been cutting shelves in only to about 3/8's and it's been working ok but it's trickier to get the arrow spine right. I also like the look of a center cut better too. Thanks again.
