Hi everybody, Thinking i will probaly have to shoot at something moving someday. Doves and Rabbits probaly. Wondering what your thoughts are on the best way to practice? I shoot a perty solid anchor and my normal shot sequence takes a minute. Im worried that by trying to shoot moving and flying targets i will be apt to snap shoot which will take me outa my element ='ing miss, miss, miss, almost hit, **** miss.

Some of the best practice my son and I have had is shooting at 6' rolling nerf ball. We each take turns at varying distances, starting at 5-6yds and if you hit you keep shooting until you miss. My son can usually out distance with my best at about 14yds. Great fun and practice for wabbits!  :archer:

I need more practice at it but I do about the same but I use a old Great stuff filled basket ball.

Shooting moving targets can mess with your form.

You must establish three things for a moving shot.  Keep it simple to start.  Line = direction of movement.  When stating use a straight line not an arching one add that later.  Rhythm = work on speed of shot to speed of target.  Follow-through = just like a shotgun, keep the bow moving during and after the shot.

LINE -- RHYTHM --FOLLOW THROUGH

If you get to the point of hitting doves on the wing, I'll buy you dinner but note I said "doves" not "dove."  Most shot gunners need about 100 shots to get 12. They're about the toughest shot gun target in hunting.

There's a big difference between snap shooting and shooting fast.  If you decide to pursue this, get some one to roll a basketball sized target across the yard and get so you can hit that.  then increase the speed, then decrease the size of the target, then toss the target in the air, then throw it smartly, then... well you get the idea.

As I said above, your self admitted shot sequence of 1 minute will take a serious hit if you shoot this way much.  But a one minute shot sequence is a little glacial even for Olympic target shooters.

Have fun and good luck.

Are you willing to give up what you are; to become what you could be?

Swing draw, last six inches straight draw, anchor deep, release.  All one motion in a second or less.  When you can do that, you can start on something moving, just add the lead and the follow through.

It won't spoil your form no more than shooting a shotgun at a bird will ruin you for shooting a rifle at a deer.  Different motion and mindset entirely.  The accomplished archer should be able to handle this with ease.

As a Tourney shooter who takes his time when at full draw, shooting at thrown discs last summer was a fun challenge for me.

I shot my Saluki Turk which is perfect for this kind of shooting, the biggest challenge was my wife, she 2 times world and 3 times Europrean champ and discoverd that she cant throw for squat      :banghead:   ended up throwing my own discs in he air.

Took me about a week to get regular hits, I found I had to do a continious track on target with Bowhand and just keep drawing through anchor in one fluid motion, I had a big desire to stop tracking\\drawing when I got on target but once I got the feel for the shot I was ok, had a great time and will do again this Summer.

I have a hard rubber dog toy (hollow skull tennis ball size) I suspend it from a string in front of my backstop, and give it a good swing before walking back to shoot my bow. When Im "on" I hit it most shots at just over 10 yards.

A deer target on a zip line, using a old level  fishing reel to retreave it works great lots of fun can change to smaller target (javlena).  The larger the drop(one end higher) the fast it goes.
As we get older our bow weight goes down and our body weight goes up, One of Lifes little jokes.

Raging Water

I use an old basketball. Yes, it will deflate but it will also re-inflate. The bladder of a basketball will continue to hold some air.

Anyway, I put the ball in front of my foot. When I am ready to shoot, I give it a little kick. I shoot it.

Or my son will kick it across my path.

Either way, I can quick draw or draw, hold, kick, release.

Try it.

I have shot moving targets at 3D shoots,  lots of fun,  follow through just like shooting ducks witha shotgun.  I have shot grouse walking and rabbits moving slowly... this year its time to try geese on the wing!
