rain gear ?

I know this subject has been tossed around but I am starting to think about rain gear for a southern Colorado elk hunt next fall (the first week of Sept).

I'm weighing packability vs warmth. My guess is the weather will be warm but after living in Wyo for four years I know those Sept showers at higher elevations can get chilly.

I looked at the Rivers West stuff today, both the regular wt and light weight (LAW). The light wt is still fairly heavy and none of it packs real small. I really liked the fit of the jacket (Lakota) and the material looks very tough.

I also saw the Browning Pac Lite (GoreTex) and the Dri Lite. Both pack down nicely but I've never been impressed with Gore Tex and the Dri Lite looks like it could rip any second.

Any thoughts on durable packable semi-warm raingear?

I think you'll be better off layering accordingly under your rain gear.That way you can get a lightweight,very packable suit. I bought a set of Peter Storm last year and like it very much.

I swear by Froggs Toggs for both hunting and fishing. I wear them under my camo clothing because I'm on the ground. Lightweight and they work...

I agree that the Gore Tex stuff is not worth the powder to blow it to hell. It only works in very cold conditions (when it isn't raining) LOL!!
Cabela's has some packable lightweight rain gear that is actually pretty good. The main drawback with any so called 'breathable waterproof' material is that it is just so much marketing hype-once you start to exert yourself like climbing and ground hunting that becomes quite evident. Layers of wool works best in my experience even if it is raining the stuff will still breathe and keep you warm.

I have used Cabelas Space Rain Ultra Pack Pullover Jacket and Pants this past season chasing elk, pigs and Kansas whitetails.  I never leave home without it now. Very light, durable and will even break the wind and keep you somewhat warm.

has anyone uses the new predator rain gear?? I hate all rain gear patterns...someone has to make a good raingear in predator camo...

There is a new product on the market called "Rivers West" this is alot like Polar Fleese however its 100% waterproof and gaurenteed so for 10 years. comes in camo and all black. They say even briars and thorns will not cause a leak. I was told with waterproof boots and a roll of duct tape you can wade a stream and not get wet. We will see I got a pair of the pants and plan on putting them through their paces this spring.

I've used Browning gore tex with pretty good results, but plan to get some Rivers West soon.  Wish they made it in a lighter pattern than Mossy Oak Break Up though.  The Max4 HiD is a little better, but more appropriate for a marsh and grasslands than the woods.  Might give the computer generated confusion pattern a try.
