I have always wanted to kill a animal with a wood shaft and couple of my tradgang buddys helped me out "dirtybird and "muzzy75" on testing and tuning my bow to a woodshaft along with all the questions i had.. I really am enjoying this journey the bow is much quieter along with having the weight that i want i hope to be able to share my success pics soon but until will you guys post your setups and pics if you have some please!!
Here is mine!

Sorry Jarrod, I have nothing constructive to add. I just wanted to post in your thread!
Actually, I have killed a couple critters with wood arrows, but it was a looooooong time ago before I was enlightened!

I usually hunt with carbons because I break a lot of wood arrows. I do enjoy hunting with wood, after all, my bows are all made of wood! :goldtooth:

Ok, I can add to this thread without being a smartalec!
This is the only critter I have ever killed with a selfbow, and wood arrow, of course! The PH did not know anything about trad bows. He told me there was no way I could kill a warthog with that bow because it was too slow and would never get enough penetration. After we recovered it, he told me I could shoot anything I wanted with my longbow!

This is a cool thread!
I made cedar arrows back in high school and shot a few pigs with them, but have since been carbon only.
It has probably been 10 years since I have shot one!
However I have been thinking about getting back into making them and may do so this spring!

love wood!
For years I hunted exclusively with wood shafts. This sika stag was the last animal I took with a wood shaft and that was about 3 years ago. Lately I started making up a couple dozen new woodies and may go out at the end of this season sporting a woodie and ribtek.

OK, that last one is a stump. But it was my FAVORITE stump where I used to hunt that is now sadly part of a hunting lease.
As far as set-up. Martin Dreamcatcher 55# and Port Orford cedar 65-70# shafts full-length (31-1/4" after head taper) for my 29-1/2" draw. Ribtec 125S, 125W or Magnus II 125 gr heads.
1966 Browning Explorer 52# with same arrows or Douglas fir 65-70# and STOS 125 gr heads.
I get a few more pounds out of each bow because I draw past 29".
I made a tapering jig and taper the last 12" from 23/64" down to 5/16" with a Dean Torges Bowyers Edge plane.

Three from the 2015 season that were all killed with the same arrow; 11/32" maple shaft with a 190 grain Cutthroat broadhead. Total arrow weight was 812 grains. The last deer broke the shaft but I was able to recover the high-dollar broadhead.

You cannot kill anything with wood shafts. They obviously do not work.

If given the option, I would take the buck you got over the bison in less than a heartbeat.

When Jayrod started this thread I had only one experience with wood arrows and they weren't spined properly for me and needless to say I went straight back to my tried and true man made materials and didn't understand. Then at the beginning of this season I wanted to give them another go so I contacted David Lawson and he made a dozen dougfir shafts for me and it was like night and day from my first experience. They are all perfectly straight and fly great!
At the time Jayrod posted this thread I could only oogle at all the great looking wood shafts and harvests but thanks to David I now understand and appreciate the allure of wood.

I have one to add from this past Sept. I never use wood arrows exept off my selfbows, and rarely hunt with them. I did get a real nice pig with my Rob Green selfbow though! This is the first ever critter shot with any Rob Green selfbow!

That's an older Mohawk from Vince, I had to rework the limbs and take some weight off of it after having a heart valve replacement in 2010. Then when I healed up I shortened the limbs reworked the tips and brought it back up to 57#.
Good thing Vince builds such a good bow, killed a bunch animals with it. Hope you enjoy your new bow

WESTBROOK, is that a GN with green glass? Nice harvests there!
That's some good eat'n Eric. This is a great thread ! I believe Westbrook's bow is a Northern Mist Superior with green glass. I could bring wrong though.
Its a Northern Mist Classic 70" 58@29"...same green as GN though. Jerry & Steve threw down the cash and had Gordons make them their own flavor of green.
