I'm gonna use my bear razorheads without the bleeders. Do any yall use them that way? Is penetration good?
Penetration will be better without the bleeders. I have shot hogs both ways and the two head always do better.
what are you hunting??? if deer it will not matter on larger game they are designed to get better penetrarion with the bleeders installed
like robslifts said, and the bear bleeders are thin enough, they break away if heavy bone is encountered.
I have shot them without bleeders for at least twelve years and love them .I think that lately they have been underrated they sharpen easily and fly great over the years I can only remember one blade that curled at the tip.
yup i like em without bleeders they do the biz
They definitely do sharpen easily, at least the old green ones. Don't know about the newer ones.
I think the knewer ones are hard to sharpen. But the older ones are easy. I got rida the bleeders, they sometimes come out and they make a nasty scar when your field dressing one.OUCH!!!They were the first two blade I ever took a deer with, they impressed me...
I love 'em. Sharpen easily with a file. Blow through deer with a 50 pound bow like a hot-knife-through-butter. I forgo the bleeders, too.
I've been useing them since the 70's and never once used the bleeders. I outa try them sometime just to see the difference..
I've used them for many years.....(years ago)
I started using them again last year after my dear Friend Lew "Made The Journey" and his wife gave me (along with other things) about 2 dozen of his old green razorheads.
I've never used the bleeders either.....
I really couldn't tell a differance with or without, but the 5-stiches in my thumb said they had ta go....The only game I've took withem's been whitetail, maybe on bigger game they might help???
I've always used the bleeders in. Only shot one deer without. I figure Fred had a reason so if it's good enough for Fred who am I to argue?
I think the new stainless ones are easier to sharpen than the old ones. At least for me. However I believe the old green ones are a stronger head. I always used the bleeders in them and I think it really helps with the blood trail. I've shot more than one deer that had a nice "X" going in and coming out. But like I said, I only used them on deer. Penetration has always been good. Just my 2 cents.

You mean they come with bleeders?! huh, musta missed that1
Never shot a deer with one, but penetration was excellent in stumps and it really did a number on tree rats! ;)
I have a handful of the old green ones. Where can I order the bleeder blades to try out?
I use them with the bleeders. The blood trails are profuse! :scared: I shot a spike a couple of years ago without the bleeders, saw him fall within 25 yards. Went to my arrow and thought I would follow the blood to him, NO external bleeding. Moot point in this case, and not exactly scientific, but from then on I used the bleeders. I always get a complete pass through with bows in the 45-55# range. I always check my exit hole to see that it is X shaped. I have heard stories of the bleeders breaking off in the wound channel. Never seen it yet, and figure it would be easy enough to find, but want to make sure. JMHO CKruse
I don't use the bleeders either, but for a total different reason. I had a problem getting good accuracy with them. Arrows flew like darts without them so I left them off. Might try again though.
That was several years back.
Bunyan,
3 Rivers Archery has them; also, sometimes you can find them on ****.
I always use the bleeders. The key is to get the bleeder "scarey sharp". If the bleeder is not sharp it will just add friction and slow down or stop the arrow penetration.
IMHO, those old green heads with the bleeders are hard to beat; easy to sharpen and leave an awesome blood trail! Good luck!

I'll be using my 45# recurve. I've made them razor sharp. I think it will work well
I sharpen my Bear SS with the Lansky system and they are shaving sharp.
Shot my whitetail last year with a green one and no bleeders and a 45# recurve.
oops and I forgot I never use the bleeders and I've always had a good blood trail when they didn't fall in sight.

I used to use them back in the 70's with a 45lb bow with the bleederblades. Best I remember I never had a problem with penetration and had good bloodtrails. The only reason I stopped using the bleederblades was because they sometimes broke off if ya hit bone. Just like Mr. Bear designed them too! Thats what I got on the end of my arrows this year. I'm a thinking Mr. Bear might have the "solution" for the problem of "penetration vs bloodtrails" A 4 blade for a nice bloodtrail unless something heavier than a rib was hit and BINGO!, the thin bleederblade breaks off and now you have a 2 blade for penetration. Only problem is that them ole' green Bear broadheads bring a nice price. Not to worry, the Magnus 125 vented can use the Bear bleederblades too. Might need to secure it in place with a dab of glue. Sorry to be so long winded but just my 2 cents worth.

I've only shot two deer w/ 2 blade razorheads. Both walked less than 50 yards and fell over. Got passthroughs on both. I shoot 2 blade zwickeys now. You won't be disappointed in them.
Are you guys saying that 4 blade broadheads with bleeders always do better without the bleeders? Or just bear razorheads?
The heads will do a great job for you. If you make a good shot your tracking job will be short to none. They will do great without the bleeder blades. I have been shooting them that way for over 25yrs. with very good luck.
The new stainless ones do not compare to the old BEar heads. I shot a deer with a new stainless head and was trashed, didn't even get the penetration I should have, if I would used an old bear head.
toddster...I like the older ones too, but the new ones shouldn't be trashed with a shot into a deer. I've shot the new ones into concrete blocks and they held up for a half-dozen shots or more before breaking. Maybe it had an issue from the start.
never used them before. I just found a old 59-60 grizzly with 1/2 dozen green ones, bleeders installed.
guess I'll be finding out for myself in a couple months
