Brothers & Sisters,
Soon we will play our role in mother nature that has been replayed over and over again through out are existence. we will again become the predator that relies on his keen senses and instincts to survive. again we will run through out are favorite hunting grounds and become one with nature, one with the forest. some of us will form packs and hunt like the wolves and some will hunt alone like mountain lion. i can already feel the changes happing in myself. i feel edgy, high strung and feel the urge to run through the mountains and streams in search of new land and sign. my pulse quickens and i have the urge to grab my knife and longbow, hit the trail and feel the freedom that only the woods can offer. in this modern age of greed and waste the woods offer to me what i feel is the only honest, clean and understanding place left. i am a different person there, i feel links to the past of a simpler life, a more honest life, a kinship to hunter and hunted. i roam the woods in search of a past i'll never find yet there still remains the echoes. as fall draws near its like a rebirth for me and i feel whole again. thanks for letting me ramble.
Adirondack Mountain Ken
Well written Ken! All I can say is Amen to that!
I agree I cant wait til the leaves start turning and that smell of fall gets in the air . Its my favorite time of the year .
Man Ken, now ya got my mouth watering, foots a tappin', gosh I can almost hear my wife b******g already, lol, Thanks for the read.. sure perked up my day.
Gives me goosebumps and the primal urge grows stronger as the days get shorter. T-minus 41 days and counting.
I'll be there with you My Brother!!!!!
May The Great Spirit Guide Your Arrows
Ken, you are reading my mind. We'll be forming a trad gang pack in about 2 months, cant wait to hunt with you guys.
well said bro
great words!
Sweet!
You ever stop? No, me neither. I know what you are saying though. With me, it hits like an itch at the end of August. Just as the velvet dries, separates and peels, causing an itch that the buck has to rub out again and again. I feel an empathetic urge to seek the good smelling bark of beeches, maples, cedars and spruces. There is a tension in my neck and back muscles that needs resistance to stretch out. Eyes become sharper, nose keener in the new swirls of a chilled wind. I get a bit froggy, full of sproing and looking for a reason to jump.
Yes, I said "sproing". That's what it sounded like in my head and I don't care about spell-check! Sorry about the itchiness. It's the chiggers talking.
Killdeer :archer:
Well said Ken. Feeling the urge myself the past week or so. Starting to see more deer moving in the area I am going start in this year. Also seeing fox, coon and armadilos in the area more now too.
Time to start growing the beard back.
I'm there too, been shooting more often now. I plan on spending most of this season on the ground still hunting and sitting in blow downs. Kind of like the mountain lion you mentioned. It is the only way to get into some of the only non-preasured hunting area (that I am aware of) in Ohio. You have to go too far in to take much equiptment. It'll be just me, my bow, some camo and a small catquiver for many a weekend. If I draw blood, it will be one heck of a lot of work to get outta there. The beauty is, I'll never come across another person while I'm out stalking, watching and even praying and thanking God for the opportunity.

Funny how I often feel closer to God sitting next to one of his trees and participating in his life cycle than I sometimes do in church??

Ken, your posts are treasures to read, and that's for sure!
Good post Ken. About this time of year I start getting twitchy, even ornery, and begin to dislike the civilized things. I sat in front of the TV last night, sharpening knives and watching Jerimiah Johnson.
I've watched the wildlife all year in my yard with amusement, now I find myself picking a spot.
A buddy call me this morning asking about a weekend we had talked about, taking all of our boys (combined, that would be 6!) on a deer hunt...
I started re-organizing my "hunting room"...nothing can motivate me to clean a room except hunting season.
Yessir, it's upon us. Almost.
Awesome words brother. It's the way you was born to be.
Nicely written. Speaks for many of us I see....
Squirrel season opened Au.1st and I had to go to take the edge off, my close freinds say I'm a different breed come hunting season,I feel it in my very soul.jonesy
Hey adkmountainken,
Move to a state where you can hunt hogs year round, and you'll never lose that feeling! :readit:
Ramble on Brother!
I will second the closer to God, the real house of worship has no walls at all. Much easier to connect with his endless energy. The spirit world is palpable out there. Shoot straight, enjoy what the good Lord has created for us!!
Amen! I have to go buy new shirts.....My neck tends to swell near the end of August each year!
Terry
although i would love to hunt hogs ( cause i love to eat!!! ) i have no desire to ever leave thses mountains i call home. i have NEVER hunted outside a 50 mile area where i live and if it were not for wanting to hunt with a few friends i doubt i ever would. the streams that flow through these mountains and the winds that blow through theses trees are the blood and breath that sustains me. i'm sure MANY are shaking their head and thinking that redneck is crazy with all the beautiful places on earth to hunt and he don't want to leave and take part in a great hunt. i would tell them that i have found my heaven, my home, my resting place, and it is called the Adirondacks!
Beautiful words Ken as the primal itch grows in us like the moon going through its cycle from a sliver to it's complete fullness of life. I won't feel that tension relase until I walk out of the woods in the dark with that full moon smiling at me in the hunters autumn sky and knowing that I am once again truly alive.
Not so good with words as Ken and Killie, what they said. The days gwt shorter, the hunt looms. Too far away to be here, too close, I want to practice at 11:20 pm.
Bret
I'm almost sick of shootin at targets. i'm ready ta put on the bdu's and go play some deer chess.
:archer:

Adkmountainken; Countless millions, (possibly billions), of people live their lives every day and NEVER know the kind of peace and happiness that you know.
Happy trails to you, and to all who feel the same way.

Ken, Those of us that have had the privilege of spending time and hunting the dacks understand. You're a lucky man.
Very well said guys and girls. I find it hard to sit behind a desk all day and not day dreaming of the time that I will be spending in the woods continuing the chase of my first deer with my stick and string. I find myself self looking at wildlife photos and going driving looking for deer at dusk. I am ready and the constant thought of deer season never seems to leave my mind as of late. I am ready and waiting!!
I was thinking along the same lines as Ken this morning as I drove to work...
At about 0430 CDT I looked to the east and saw Orion rising in the early morning sky. When I start seeing "The Hunter" in the pre-dawn darkness I know it is time for me to start thinking HUNT on my days off instead of MOW... :)
Still early and too hot but a person can dream can't they...
i see iam in one of the pack with our train of thought and urges. it feels like we are all starting to howl a bit to locate each other as the hunger grows!
aaaaahhhhhhhoooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooo
I'm Ready My Brother!!!!! :archer:
Have you ever noticed that of all the teeth in your mouth the one that the dentist never seems to need to do anything to is the canine tooth. Something to think about... :bigsmyl:
Good read. Thanks for posting it. You definitely have a way with words. have a good predator season this year.
