Title: New RER Vortex
Post by: Jedimaster on August 03, 2007, 04:39:00 PM
My new Vortex arrived two days ago. I just had an opportunity to really break her in today. This little bow will SHOOT! I'm sure once we get everything tweaked this will be my hunting bow this season. She's 56"AMO and 50#@28", osage riser with zircote flair and bocote veneers over bamboo limbs. The best looking bow I've had. If you saw Golden Hawks bow here a couple of weeks ago, mine is very similar. In fact I've sent him some pictures and he's gonna try to help me by posting some for all to see. I just want to say thanks to him for helping me with the pics and of course a BIG thanks to Kevin, Sue and family for all they do to make us smile.

Here are some pics of Jedi's new toy. Very similar to mine just not as many accent stripes.

Darn near twins. Jedi's riser was originally glued up for my bow but we added for accents to it.

that Medallion is the new RER Bows medallion. All the 2007 on bows will have it.
Shawn you would love that grip on the Vortex. It really locks you into a perfect hand placement everytime.

The Vortex looks like a twin to the Super Shrew and the JK Traditions Kanati longbow...same basic design features right down to the thumb ridge.  For those who have shot these bows, notice much difference between them re overall performance or general 'feel'?

Jeff: "stringwalker" now that's funny stuff. I do love the original trilogy but... all the jedi stuff is just left over from wilder times.

Here is the real story behind my bow:
I asked Kevin about an in-stock Vortex a couple of weeks ago. He was making up a couple and this was one of them. I'm a nut for osage and the contrasting colors so I had to have it. In between my conversations with Kevin I saw LeRoy's bow on here so I told Kevin about it. He let me know that my bow was only made possible because of some changes they had made in the accents on his riser. I was just fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. It is so exactly what I wanted that I couldn't have designed it better myself.

So do you actually let your daughter shoot her bow or do you always have your hand wrapped around its grip?

no Steve she is 15 and and very capable of doing things on her own. I just take it from her now and then when she's shooting poorly and prove it isn't the bow.LOL!!

Why don't you send me your daughters bow till both of mine get here in April 2008?

31 @ 28.  Heck, I can handle that.

LeRoy has not shot mine-that I know of-but if ever we run into each other he is more than welcome to!
Last year I got my Vortex and this spring I noticed a few cloudy spots in the glass, both above and below the fadeouts. Not big spots just something I noticed. Called Kevin who wanted some pics. Asked him what to do, thinking a little superglue even though you couldn't feel anything along the bevels.
His response was he hadn't seen anything like it before. His solution: I now have a brand new bow with the same specs.THAT is why I am a loyal RER addict. He is a gentleman as well as a h*** of a fine bowyer.

How does their Vortex compare performance wise to their take down recurve?  They are working on sending me a bow when they get it done.

I don't have a chronograph but the performance of the Vortex was more than I expected. It has to be close although I have not shot them side by side.

The Vortex has good performance! As you would expect though the recurves are faster. Both are great! No bad choices here.

well' I guess I'll chime in here and say "that's a sweet looking bow". I wish you MANY hours of pure pleasure with it. I know I LOVE my Vortex. I actually have 10 kills with mine. 1 bird and 9 whitetail. Mine is a HUNTING bow first, not quite as beautiful as some of the ones pictures on this site. My 'little black bow' (as you all know) is a 56"er and 46#s @ 28"s. I shoot GT Traditionals 35/55 cut 29"s with a 50 grain brass insert and 125 grain points and three 5" shield cut LW feathers, total arrow weight 450 grains. that is 9.78gpp and thru the chrono it averages 184fps. And' NO, LeRoy has never shot my Vortex. LOL  :archer:

Post by: snag on August 04, 2007, 01:11:00 PM
Wow, 184fps! That's fast. My 53#@28" chrono'd with 620gr carbons(hunting arrows) at 160fps. I will be adjusting what I shot out of it. That was all I had when trying it out. I do like heavier arrows for hunting.

You guys with new Vortex's....Leroy only lives a couple hours drive up the road from Kevin and Sue.  Rumor has it he goes up there on weekends and test fires all new bows.

As far as I know he hasn't shot mine, just her pretty sister. But as they say, "it ain't over till the fat lady sings"! This is the first bow that I have not allowed any of my shooting buddies to invite home for a sleep-over. Ain't gonna happen any time soon either. Going out to do some shooting under the booger light tonight.

Jedi,

Beautiful bow!  I've got a 56" Vortex that I ordered last year that is a pleasure to shoot.  One question.....to your knowledge did Kevin do anything special to the Bocote on your limbs to get it to look like that?  Did he stain it darker or something?  Those are without a doubt the most striking bacote veneers that I have ever seen.  Thanks for any information that you may have.
