Title: Kentucky Elk?
Post by: 702plmo on July 30, 2007, 05:43:00 PM
Just wondering if any tradganger has been selected to take part in the past Kentucky elk Hunts?   if so how was the hunt?   Has there been a Kentucky Elk taken with a traditiional bow?

I keep entering and hope this year is the one. I don't know if a Tradganger has been drawn or if one has been taken with a recurve/longbow. I really don't think so though. Results of the draw will be posted on 8/20/07.

It would be nice to get a few of them to swim across the river into Indian.  :)

How many Elk are estimated to live in KY?

Last I read was about 7000.   They are wanting the heard to get to 10000.   The largest heard east of the big river.

I keep entering also.  Maybe we can get both of us in this year Benha.  Want to share elk camp?

Check the KDFWR web site for pictures.  There have been some big ones taken.  I scanned the pictures and saw some compounds, but no traditional bows.

New rule this year is that bulls must have at least four points on one side.

As mentioned earlier, results of the draw will be up on 8/20.

You can take stragglers in VA with just a deer tag.  Of course since the opening 2000-2001 season only 25 have been killed.  I'm not sure of size or sex.

Darkegreen,
Some have swam the river just not to you according to my buddy that is a conservation officer there are between 50 and 100 running around in southern IL. The good is that they are moving this way, the bad is that they are free game because they aren'ton any of the game laws in IL

Sounds like a plan Benha.  Now all we have to do is get drawn.

I've got it figured out that if 12,000 enter, we have a one in forty chance of getting drawn.  That's pretty long odds, but who knows?  Maybe we will get lucky.

Marvin, Didn't something like 25,000 enter last year?
My brother in law guides for elk over that way, he could get me close. Now all I need is that doggone tag  :(

I don't think I saw the count on it from last year.  I was just throwing out numbers.

I'd love to see a trad archer get drawn.  Maybe one of us will get to go.

From what I understand they have crossed over into WV. Good thing they didn't wander into the ATAR range.  :scared:  Just kidding.  :D  I entered once but need to enter every year, as close as I live to them.

They were expecting 30,000 to enter the draw this year for the 300 tags.  Still better chances than the lottery.  Actuallly, there's only 299 tags this year cause one of em's got my name on it.  Been saying that since they started.  Hoping it comes true someday.

KY is dedicating a bull tag and a cow tag to youths only.   So the count starts at 298.    I put my wife my son and myself in this year.    This is my first year putting in.

There is a guy that killed one last year with traditional equipment.  Not sure of his name, but he is a buddy of Harry Whitehead of Gunner's taxidermy.  Used to be a pic on Harry's website gunnerstaxidermy.com

Two weeks till results are posted.  Anybody else getting antsy?

Wow, 30,000 expected!!  I guess that makes the odds something like 100 to 1.  Anybody besides me feeling lucky?

Don't forget that you can hunt out of zone elk this year with the $360 out of zone tag. There are more and more elk outside the restoration counties and this year you only have to telecheck the elk when you harvest one.  No more having the warden come out to issue your kill permit for the elk.  Same seasons as the regular elk/deer seasons.  For those of you that don't get drawn for a permit, you can still hunt KY for elk...just not in the restoration counties.

Bucks2hunt:

If there are Elk in S. IL I doubt they came from the KY restoration program.  Those areas are way too many miles from here.  That would be one heck of a trip "down the Ohio" even for an elk.  There is a possibility that they are lost fenced animals.

A young friend of mine was drawn for a cow. He's 12 years old and has been bouncing off the walls since he found out. I'm gonna go with him and his dad to try and scout out some potential areas.  Anybody know how much the average mature cow weighs?

Shannon,  I'm glad to hear a youth got as tag.  Have fun and good luck.    I have no idea how much a cow weighs but if you run out of freezer space let me know I can take some of the nasty tasting elk meat off their hands.   LOL

I've ate it before...blows whitetail meat away!!!  If he gets one, thay'll not be a piece of meat as big as your thumb left on that thing when we're finished with it. Course, i'm not counting my chickens just yet but I hear the success rate is pretty high.

I heard about 350# field dressed.
Hope to get an exact figure - I was drawn!!  :bigsmyl:

Shannon, Didn't realize I had another TradGanger in my area till now. I know WeekendWarrior from T-ville, you all share the same last name.

If you want some good East Ky elk info, holler at me. My bro-in-law guides some over there. I'm sure he could help you out.
