At the recent PBS banquet I was just sitting there minding my own business after dinner enjoying the auction. I had no intention of buying anything, and was just watching the action.
Then the bidding on a gorgeous Fox longbow by Ron King seemed to get hung up at a price that was just too much of a bargain to pass up. Just like dipping your toe in the ocean, you had better be cautious of riptides hiding beneath the surface. Before I knew what was happening I was sucked in deep and ended up with one of the most beautiful and unusual bows I have ever seen.
Nice D shape profile with slim lines.

Great looking riser of Cocobolo and black Dymondwood.

No, that's not an optical illusion. And it wasn't a case of a bandsaw gone wild. Ron really let his creative talents overflow...

Even the handle section has a snakey cross section to it with an offset grip.

This is Bow #1 of the new model Ron calls the King Snake.

The bow's a real BEAUTY Whip  CONGRATS :archer2:
Awesome bow, I can see myself with something like that.
Beautiful longbow Joe! This looks like something new and special!
That is a great looking bow Whip. Congrats
looks cool, enjoy!!!
Wow Joe! That is one of the prettiest, craziest fiberglass bows I've ever seen! That wavy limb pattern reminds me of an Osage selfbow pictured in Chet Stevenson's book showing a similar looking bow he made from an unusual set of billets sent to him by Fred Bear. Very unique.
Dave
Just WOW mate !
Beautiful !
Joe
That is awsome. It IS a good thing I was not there. That is exactly the kind of auction item that gets me in trouble every time.
What a beauty !
Enjoy.
Joe -
That is an amazing bow.
Danny
Thats badass !
Now that is very cool!!!!
That is gorgeous.
Let us know how she shoots. Sure is pretty.
Sweet bow, Whip!
Cool Bow!
Whip,
I'm sure it shoots just as good as my Fox Royal Crown that you onced owned...I've got a Fox High Sierra T.D as well and I'm certain that this Kingsnake has to be just as sweet shooting as those two? Nice bow Whip !
Great looking bow!! :clapper:
The talents in the PBS never cease to amaze me. Awesome purchase.
Congrats Joe that is one sweet bow.
That's cool Joe,you did well.
Whip, That is one sweet looking bow. I see how you got the bidding fever.
Very cool congrats Whip!
So I guess now it's a "Whip snake"! :D
Now that is cool!!! Bringing a little snakey selfbow look to the laminated world. :notworthy: You know Joe, that bow has got to be skinned. No question about it. I like it! :clapper:
Bill
And a mighty fine snake it is Joe!
Nice bow
Bill, you're absolutely right, this bow is begging for a set of snakeskins!
I shot the bow just a little bit yesterday and it seems to shoot really well. Although I haven't shot straight gripped longbows for quite some time, so this was very different for me. I'm trying to get dialed in for turkeys starting next week I don't want to do too much with it right now.
That's really beautiful in it's simplicity. I realize that some "simple" things are not when it comes to making it. I'm interested in how it would shoot in comparison to a "straight" one of the same relative specs. Also, if it's center cut, etc.
Cool looking bow fo sure!
That is Beautiful!!!!!!
Joe,
That is a beautiful bow and I for one don't believe that Ron King gets his due. I have a Triple Crown and had a High Sierra that I wish I hadn't sold. Ron is just a great bowyer and by the way does anyone know how Debbie is doing?
Regards,
Rick
No denying how cool it looks, how does it shoot? High cool factor!
That wave in the handle makes one think center (or past) cut. Good work, Whip. One never really falls asleep at an auction, especially with items like that showing up. Always have some cash at an auction for those "must haves." You can make your excuses later.
Awesome looking bow...and glad you won it.
I was thinking of bidding on it, but figured it would stretch my wallet too thin. I saw Larry Yien bidding, but after the bidding was over, I did kick myself.
You did good!
Looker alright!
Joe,
I guess I'll ask the obvious question,, Why other that asthetics? I understand self bows that turn out "snakey". Just curious why one would build it that way, on purpose, Other than because they could.
It is a beautiful bow, and I assume as with most snakey bows, a real converstion starter. Thanks.
LD
Sweet bow Joe!! don't get to see you to much with a longbow in hand, thats really nice. Congrats.
Thats a nice snake :)
Just awesome! Splendid "blurring" of the lines...Essentially a selfbow with the durability of a glass overlayed bow. I think it's brilliant. Does that mean you don't have to follow selfbow etiquette? Go ahead son draw her to 29!
Thanks for sharing...

Caddo, in reality of course the only reason that it was built this way is just for show. It does shoot just as good as any D shape longbow, so nothing given up. But the unusual looks really add to the WOW factor. And it showcases Ron's skill as a bowyer - the man is good!
This bow was just so unique that I couldn't resist. Although as a standard longbow it really doesn't fit my style, so we'll see if it stays in the stable or not. I'll play with it some after turkey season is over. But it sure is cool for now!
Oh, and grouseshooter, Debbie was at the banquet Saturday night with Ron. She seemed to be doing pretty good, although I know she did have a treatment earlier that day that had kind of dragged her and they were headed out a little early that evening. We're all praying for her success in the battle with cancer!
Congratulations Whip. That is a nice looking bow. I have two of Rons longbows & a Breed. They are great shooting bows.
You are going to like it.
Frank
That offset handle looks very similar to the self bow handles Stim Wilcox makes. Looks very natural to hold.
Joe,
Very neat bow. I bet the crook in the handle helps shooting accuracy. genious!
cant wait for a try!
Very cool Joe,good luck with the turkeys, John
Very nice bow Joe!
Joe,
Thank you for the update on Debbie.
Rick
Good looking snakey stick buddy!
Joe,
That is a COOL bow and it drew really nice !!! I wish it was a LEFTY I would have bid on it at the auction :-)
That's a cool looking bow! Good luck turkey hunting. When you get get sick of that bow....let me know, I might have to give it a try.
Awesome bow! Thanks for sharing.
Looks like you need one in your future Kingsnake!
Yep, you have to be careful at those PBS auctions. Just ask my wife, I always show restraint.
Nice bow. You gonna be totin it at Ojibwa?
Very good looking Bow Joe, Hope you have a ton of fun shooting it. I love to hate auctions, gets me in trouble every time. Unless like the last one and I spent Charlie's money. But he ended up with 3 very nice bows at a very good price. I need to start buy some of them for myself now.
Congrats on a cool bow.

I can bring it along, but I won't be shooting it. Trying to stay dialed in with my turkey hunting set up. My shooting stinks enough without throwing a totally different type of bow into the mix...

Great looking bow Joe....love the shape. I hear you with the last part about shooting different bows.
I guess I have to ask, can that be ordered? Would he do another for a customer?
Justa awsome looking bow. Congrates to the owner and the bowyer.
I'll be over tomorrow to try that one out for you.
You got it, Whip! I was taken by the title of the post for obvious reasons. Hoping to see actual 'kingsnakes' . . .but not at all disappointed when I saw that serpentine arrow slinger! :)
That is one sleek looking bow, congratulations Joe. You'll have lot's of fun getting to know it when turkey season is over.
-Jay
What a great bow!
Ron, The way Ron made it sound the King Snake is the newest addition to the Fox Bow line up. Give him a call.
Nice bow Joe...bring it to Ojibwa with you next week!
Thanks Joe....Not sure if I'm ready for one but it is really neat!! :notworthy:
Wow, Whip
That is a neat bow!!!
Joe I'm glad you got the "King Snake" bow. Ron told me about the bow and it truly is a thing of beauty and an interesting tribute to where our bows came from before glass.
It features the fine craftsmanship we have come to expect in a Fox bow, an it features Ron's talent and his artistic flair.
I'm sure you all have noticed that Fox Archery website is now up and running.
My greatest joy at PBS Portland was being able to give Debbie a hug and she is in my prayers for a healthy recovery.
Hi All, I was wondering where this bow was now?
Hi All, I was wondering where this bow was now?
Shoot Joe an email or PM. He's usually out on hunting trips but will get back to you eventually.
I owned it for awhile, believe 4dogs owns it now.
Yep>Glenn was gracious and sold the Bow to me. She is a great bow, I have a blast shooting her, very well behaved bow and starts a lot of conversations at the range.
It is a shame that you cant se the pictures still,
I remember it was spectacular to look at.
Can anyone post or email pictures? It sounds special :)
Hi All, Been a while as life has been hectic for my lot as well as most of the planet over the last few. Just thought I would inquire as to the whereabouts of this gorgeous bow as I feel it must be due for a trip Downunder
Wow, great resurection. Love it!!!
What a beautiful, unusual bow! Enjoy :clapper:
Hi Clinton...I'm still the proud owner :)
So Glad to hear that Mate. Can you do us all a favour and throw a couple of pics up of her and please keep me in mind if you ever want to move it on😉
Yep..Your first on the list of 14 lol...Im not so good at posting pictures. I'm seeing the ones on here fine..you are not? I can text you some if you like.
I'm glad the snake was a bow and not an actual snake. I love snakes -(have a ball Python named Lt.Dan). That is a very nice looking bow. And gentlemen... if you happen to cross paths with any live snakes while out in the woods this season..please don't kill them. Let them go on their way.

That's no worries at all Mate, I live in Australia so much respect is given to danger Noodles down here
