I know fletch-tite platinum is a great product - but I must be extremely unskilled. I'm losing feathers like crazy from carbon shafts with no wraps.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Basically, my procedure has been to clean the shafts with 91% alcohol, air dry, and glue, with about 25 minute set time. Feathers initially adhere great, but after a few days shooting, start jumping ship.
Is it generally better to go heavy with the glue, or light? I'm sure the problem is me. Thanks for any hints-
Are you using Isopropyl alchohol or rubbing? Rubbing has some stuff in it you don't want.
I've only used Platinum over wraps but it works fantastic on them.
I use denatured alcohol to clean the shaft and I don't use platinum anymore because I had the same problem you are having. I use goat tuff now for that reason.
I lite sand with 400 W/D then clean with Acetone till it squeaks. Fletch with Platinum. never had a fletching come off.........
Thanks for the advice - I'll have another try
I've used it on carbons for years. The only thing I would suggest,if you are not doing it already, is to go light on the glue and make sure you put a dab on the front and back of each feather when finished. I have been very happy with the platinum.
I read somewhere that most packaged fletching has been treated with an anti-mildew product and that you should wipe off the quill base with alcohol too, and let it dry before fletching. Doing this and wiping down the carbon shafts with alcohol works for me and I'm using platinum. No problems.
Try goat tuff on carbons. I used it when I shot carbons out of a wheelie bow and it worked great.
The only time I had a problem with Platinum was when I used a tube that had been opened months earlier. Never had a problem when I used fresh Platinum on carbon.
I can't get it to stick well on carbons either. I use Fast Fletch or Goat Tuff and they stick like......well like......glue.
I lightly sand with 4/0 steel wool in the area to fletch, clean with Isopropyl or acetone, then use Duco. No problems with fletching lifting.
Superglue gel.
Thanks for all the relies - this site is great.
ack.. make that replies
i used to use it, but i went to fletch tape for the speed and that ht was sticking to my clamp so when i removed the clam the feather was being pulled off... :banghead: other than that, ive just used it over wraps on feathers, on plastic vanes i used it straight on the carbon and it held great...
Okay I am risking boo's and hisses but....
There are arrows that FT platinum works great on and there are those where it doesn't. No matter how aggressive of a solvent I use to prepare the surface. Example: Epic ST; Awesome. Beman MFX classic look: Not so much. When the FT don't work I use Flex Fletch.
Try the fletching tape. You'll never go back to glue.
