Title: who uses snuffers on elk?
Post by: brackshooter on July 26, 2007, 01:41:00 PM
Just traded for some snuffer 160s, they will be mounted on steel adaptors for about 275 grains, 660 grains total, shot out of my rose oak at about 193.  Wanted to know if this will suffice, and would like to know who else uses snuffers for elk, and what your setups are.

thanks

oh, by the way, PLEASE dont tell me not to worry about penetration, and to just make a good shot.  I already know this, but I do worry about penetration, as I think everyone should.  Its the occasional missed shots I worry most about, I want to be sure it will still do the job.
thanks,

If you get them scarry sharp they will blow through a bull.I think you should go up to 325 grains up front but that will suffice.

660 grains at 193fps!  That's 54lbs of KE and hell of a lot of momentum for a stickbow.  I've never hunted elk, but I sure wouldn't be afraid to use a 160 Snuffer with that setup.

If I had those numbers, I'd use a 160 Snuff for everything!

Good luck elk hunting.

Morning Star,
I have a 30.5 inch draw and shoot about 68# of weight, so that definatly makes a difference.  Being a gorilla helps alot when it comes to archery!

They still have a helluva shoulder and legbone and accidents happen.  Listen to the Guru Doc Ashby and always take a heavy 2 blade to the dance.  Read up on his data.   :readit:
But just have fun anyway, good luck!

Have had pass throughs on elk with them and my buddies have had as well. I would not hesitate at all with your setup.  Shoot and start the gutting!!

It will do the job, but what ya said about a bad hit does not matter. It will not do the job on a shoulder shot, unless ya get lucky. As long as ya get great arrow flight that will kill any game in North America including moose. Shawn

I have used them on moose. They stuckout the other side with no problem.Everyone mentions Dr.Ashby and his reports which are great. But remember if you use that heavy 2 blade take that heavy 900 gr. arrow with it.

With those kind of gorilla numbers i wouldn't think twice about my setup. I shoot the same weight out of a 58 and 60 pound longbow with a woodsman up front and don't think about it because it has been enough for the last 2 years on elk.

Good grief, with those numbers you could rip it's heart out with a Judo!  I need to get my "alligator arms" lengthened.

Here's a nice So. Co bull that succumbed to a Snuffer.  You can see it sticking out the off shoulder.  Was bedded and the snuffer entered right below the spine and angled through liver and lungs.  The stream of blood coming out the entry hole was amazing.  Shhh....just don't tell anyone it was before I shot traditional.  Still shoot Snuffers.  Probably still have that broadhead...but on a carbon goldtip for my CheckMate.  Oh and it went through the thick part of a rib on the way in, the tip was sharpened to needle point and did curl just at the very end.   You can see the snuffer here.  I now cringe just thinking how I could have slipped while trying to take pictures and skewered myself....not too bright....but awfully excited.  To help compare energy, that was a 29" 2413 with 125 grain snuffer maybe pushing 230 out of that old compound at most.Steve

Brack,

From experience, they work fine and do a great job.
