Title: Redi-Edge for Woodsman
Post by: jojotater on July 25, 2007, 08:25:00 PM
Will a Redi-Edge put a good edge on a Woodsman?

I find with the 3 rivers gadget(which  is basically the same)that I can't get them shaving sharp. It's good for taking metal off fast. I can get them sharper faster with a file and ceramic stone. I like to carry the 3Rivers in the field for touch ups.

No.  The angles don't match at all, it also won't get the very tip of the head.

There is an excellent file sharpening tutorial in the video section that will give you the best results IMO for the Woodsman/Snuffer/Razorcap type heads.

Wow...this is what's so cool about this place...the depth of different experiences...

Hi, My name is Doc Nock and I'm sharpening Impaired.  :)

I could NEVER get a repeatable decent edge on anything till Ed sold me a Redi-edge. In fact, he was so sure, he gave me one at Denton and told me if it didnt' work, send it back or send him a check.

Short Story: Ordered 2 more and paid for the 3.

I've personally sharpened the Woodsman, but it did take some work to change angles and to smooth out the "step jump" on the braze to the point... I've seen Ed at the shoots demo the Howard Hill blade razor sharp and other onery blades.

FWIW... I still have to take my time and be consistent with each stroke...but I've done the Woodsmans.

I would have to agree the redi-edge is a good choice for these and most blades for that matter.

Regarding the "angles" being wrong for the WW, I would say that after having stood in front of the belt sander for a half hour just getting all the WW edges in the same plane so I could start sharpening them, the "orginal" angles don't mean that much.  That was only for 3 heads.

Frankly I still don't get the allure for the WWs, but that is just me.

Mike, do you have any problems sharpening all the way to the tips with the gadget?
